here's one for ya. I'm considering names for my new (to me) boat. I'm kinda digging Pleiades (the constellation...seven sisters, ect)...howver, I head that JImmy Buffet had a boat by that name. So far I've found that he mentions the group of stars in a song about a boat built by aliens or something but I'm still unsure about the name of the vessel in question. Obviously I'm not the biggest Jimmy fan (no offense to you parrotheads!) and I don't want people to think I named my boat after his. Anyone know anything about this???

Cosmic Muffin?

You may be referring to the Cosmic Muffin (related link below) which inspired "Desdemona's Building a Rocketship" and Jimmy wrote about in his book "Where is Joe Merchant?" Other boat names: DotCalm - internet related Wyuna - Australian Aboriginal word meaning " Clear Water" Nereid - The Nereids, the sea nymphs, are the 50 daughters of the sea god, Nereus Granuaile - Gaelic warrior woman was not so much a pirate as a seafaring warrior http://www.omalley-clan.org/uow/omalley_web/granuaile.htm Waltz On Water - dance related Aeolus - Custodian of the four winds, see Homer If you're ever in Lakeland/Orlando/Tampa and would like to see the last of the Pan Am Clippers, stop by Fantasy of Flight: http://www.fantasyofflight.com/aircraftpages/sunderland.htm Happy sails *_/), MArk

On Margaritaville.com...

...you can review JB's lyrics. The only reference to Pleiades is in the lyrics of the song "Desdemona's Building a Rocket Ship" on the Banana Wind album. And it's not the name of a boat.

Something understandable over the radio

One consideration in your boat name may be using something that can be communicated with relative ease to bridge tenders, other boats, etc. We considered "La Dolce Far Niente", which I've seen on other boats, but is too much of a mouthfull IMO, for the radio. I'm personally partial to women's names for boats. It seemed to work well for Forrest Gump, too. Marc_B "Bonita Louise"

Variant Spelling

A name with a varient spelling can also confuse people on the radio. My boat name is "AKERS AWAY", which is a variation of you know what. Every time I enter a different marina or talk to someone on the radio, the name obviously gets bastardized. But I've learned to accept it. I just keep using the name as it's spelled and let the destination see for itself when I get there.

vixen

we picked "vixen" for 3 reasons. it sounds nice and crunchy over the radio. it cost a minimum for boat lettering, and best of all, the definition in webster. 1) a female fox (i.e. beautiful, cunning, swift, etc...imo) 2) a shrewish unmanagable female...(usually, i find boats to be one or the other, depending on their mood.

Incommunicado

That was the Jimmy Buffet name on our 25 Catalina, only it was spelled wrong like the song. It drove me crazy, since I'm an editor. Good point about commo on the radio. Don't name your boat Vessel In Distress, either. Nor Maytag.

Make it friendly

Although it may have deep historical or mythical or other academic meaning, if people can't pronounce it or spell it or understand it on the radio it is not user friendly. You may be perceived as that weird 'foreign' boat with the strange name. Over analyzing? Maybe. Practice saying it as radio calls and see how easy it is to pronounce and how easy it is to understand by someone who has never seen it written. Also consider common misunderstandings of the pronunciation. Despite hearing Bucklehead's calls on the VHF for weeks, we still wondered why someone would name their boat Knuckle Head. Having said all this, I am sure that PlayWiDeez is a perfectly suitable name :)

mythology

Everyone seems to know the pleiades as the seven sisters, but few know that they were the daughters of Atlas in Greek mythology, named Maia, Electra, Celaeno, Taygeta, Merope, Alcyone, and Sterope. There's gotta be a boat name in there somewhere. (Alcyone has been done, by the way. Cousteau used it for the name of his "other" boat.)

parrothead generator

I know you don't want to name your boat after a buffet song, How about perseverance, or solitude, blown away, ship of fools, loca luna translation" crazy moon". someone posted a parrothead generator link one time that would just keep coming up with words out of different buffet songs, does anyone remeber that link? Tim Welsh H34 AKA Cabo Wabo, Yes I named my boat after a song, but no one forgets that name, just about anyone on Lake Ouachita knows my boat because of the name.

Family names.......

My father's boats were named "Hollyday" after my mother, Holly and me David. My wife and I had considered "Ginda" for Ginni and David but we settled in Imagination because she said I had always imagined having a nice boat. It's my imagination! David
