Remeber the Titanic

Was the only ship in the White Star Line not to have a christening ceremony (they were behind schedule). It was also the only ship in the WSL that sank.

Debra, Its true the Titanic was not christened

But I do not believe any of the White Star ships were christened. " White Star and Harland and Wolff never believed in christening any of their ships and was a main cause of superstition" Check out these 2 sites. http://www.frostnet.co.uk/indext2k-chronology.htm http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/OCEAN_PLANET/HTML/titanic_faq.html Either way...I'm Christening my boat!!

White Star did not customarily indulge in such old-fashioned and superstitious practices" Check out these 3 sites. http://www.frostnet.co.uk/indext2k-chronology.htm http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/OCEAN_PLANET/HTML/titanic_faq.html http://www.titanicmovie.com/past/info_3_info.html Either way...I'm Christening my boat!!

Hesperus to Too Grand

When we found our first boat, a 26 foot Clipper Marine, it was abandoned and forlorn in a marina in Lake Geneva, WI. It was named "Hesperus" and had been donated to one of those "sea schools" for a tax deduction. They were advertising it for $12,500 and we offered them $1000. They talked us up to $2000 so we renamed the boat "Too Grand" after my wife said it was still Too Grand for us. Hesperus seemed like a weighty name for a small sailboat. We wanted a casual name. We are not superstitious (knock on wood) so we had no ceremony other than breaking a bottle of Miller High Life (Milwaukee) over the bow. We sailed her for fifteen years with no incidents or emergencies. We sold her to a farmer from Kansas who trailered her to his condo in Belize. He paid $4800 but still got a bargain because we put a lot into her. My wife wanted to change the name yet again to "Two Grand Per Year". Fair winds. No name boat

I didn't technically "rename" my boat as I could find no indication it had ever been named in her 25 year old history. I did a mini-naming ceremony that didn't involve getting anything sticky or sharp on my new paint job. I guess I kinda figured that naming her after Neptune's wife was about the best homage I could pay! LaDonna

A New Name

We're purchasing our first boat and it is a used boat. Neither my wife or I like the current name and will be renaming the boat the "Rantom Scoot", an old Nantucket whaler's term meaning "a voyage of no particular destination." We do plan on using both a denaming ceremony and a christening for the new name. As part of the christening I plan on using the "Sea Prayer" from the "Carmina Gaedelica", a collection of Celtic prayers. It is a wonderful prayer for the dedication of a boat. It anyone is interested email me at AKsailor@hotmail.com and I'll send you a copy of the "Sea Prayer."
