Hi everyone, I'm looking to buy a Catalina 22 in sound condition but in need of a lot of love and attention. I'm a pretty serious do-it-yourselfer, but I don't really want to rebuild an entire boat. Age is not as important to me as condition, praticularly the fiberglass and gel-coat. I have found several listings in my price range rangeing from 1971 to 1984. I understand that there are a few different models of the Catalina 22 and that in has seen many improvements over the years. Could anyone tell me what is different about each model and why any design changes took place. Were there any problems that plagued a particular model such as a tendency for the deck to delaminate or the keel to work loose etc. I'm trying to narrow the field, and I know that when it comes to boats, newer does not always mean better. Does anyone know if I should avoid any particular model or year range? Any advice will be greatly appreiciated. By the way, I do know what is different about the MK II, and that model does not intrest me. Thanks everyone. Shawn Wheaton

Mark ll

Hi Shawn, I am wondering why the mark ll doesn't interest you? Is it the price? the layout, what? I have kept a keen eye on Catalina's developement of the 22' sloop over the years and i think as a new owner of a Mark ll 2000, they have pulled it all together in a culmination of a much better design and bulit boat then ever before. Now if it's the lack of teak wood in use on the newer models then you know you can add your own accents to personalize your own little yacht. The improvements in the swing keel, gelcoat and fasteners not to mention the additional beam and improved sailcloth and rigging. I bet this 2000 of mine will be around just as long if not longer then a 1971 or 84 or any of the rest. By the way I power mine with 1 1984 Honda 7.5 ob which fits like a glove. Thanks, Dave LaPere

'87 a key year

'87 and above saw many improvements in the construction and strength of the 22's I agree the mark II was an improvement --in the wrong direction- these "improvements"were driven by $, not design. look for anything '87 and above, at the price- around 5k you should find a great boat and go sailing- if ya got the need to "fix-Up" buy an old Islander and fix it up when your not sailing the 22
