What's a quick and easy way to...

...remove masking tape that was left on the hull for years? It's the blue stuff... The PO left it on the hull after having the bottom soda blasted. It's right at the boot stripe, over the existing Imron paint that's in really nice shape. I can scrape it with my thumbnail but need a faster, better method than that. Goof Off? I don't want to contaminate the soda blasted gel coat (what's left of it...) with stripper or anything that will leave a residue or damage the paint.

Thanx,

Tom G

razor blade scraper? Acetone might remove the glue residue without contaminating.

I tried a razor blade but it was tearing up the paint. Would acetone dull the Imron paint finish?

Fingernails and a lot of patience. After the paper of the tape is off, Goo Gone will remove the adhesive residue.

Second the heat gun, on low, or even a good hair dryer. Then if you can get it started from an edge, the heated adhesive may let it release in larger pieces, which is where the time savings starts to mount. Be patient - sometime the way to go faster is to slow down.

Try mixing 1/3 acetone, 1/3 interlux fiberglass solvent wash 202,
Mineral spirits you need a slow penatrating solvent to desolve the glue under the tape. Acetone evaporates to quickly all by itself. I had the same happened to me where the tape didn't get removed for a few months. Also used a plastic scraper along with a lot of patience, you have your work cut out you.

Goof Off + plastic scraper: Apply with elbow grease. It worked great (long on the elbow grease...)

Thanx everyone...

XYLENE works without a doubt, just learned about it a few years ago, don't know how I survived without it.

I removed a waterline stripe to replace it several years ago and the heat gun is the only way to go. Use a PLASTIC

...scraper as anything metal will scratch. The real work is getting the remaining adhesive off. Goo gone, acetone, mineral spirits,, all of them help but unfortunately elbow grease was the only effective solution. When using the solvents rotate your rag continuously or you'll just put the old dissolved glue right back down on the surface again.

As far as fingernails go, you might try Popsicle sticks instead.

I'd use a heat gun on low and then use fresh tape to pick off the old adhesive. Sometimes doing this with the same
type of adhesive works well, but you can also try Gorilla tape.
