I'm trying to find out what a good adhesive is to use for gluing backing boards to the hull of the boat. It has to be strong and permenant and last longer than the wood. The old wood has rotted and fallen apart and I'm refitting the boat. I'm thinking fiberglass resin would be good, but does anyone know of a sure fire product? Thanks for the help....

If you use resin cut some 1/4" strands of fiber

glass and mix into a paste before applying. It will be alot stronger. Frank

Smooth-on epoxy is great for wood to fiberglass.

I glue up hundreds of wood-glass archery bows a year with Smooth-on. It is a 2 part glue. The part A looks like vaseline, and the part B looks like honey. It's thick, and stays put better than most epoxys. It also fills gaps better. Rough up the gluing surfaces, and clean with acetone first. Sets in 24 hours or faster with heat. You can search the web for archery suppliers to find it.

It is used as a sealant, but it is actually an adhesive and is perfect for backing plates. Going with a two part resin is overkill for this task as the adhesive adds no strength, its purpose is only to hold the plate in position when the bolts are removed. Anyone who has tried to remove hardware 'sealed' with 5200 can attest to its tenacity.
