What's a Clew Strap??

Hey Guys, Haven't posted in a while. I hope everyone is having a great winter. Quick question: I just ordered a new main from my local sail loft. I told them I do some racing & I asked for a large roach & loose foot, which they're going to put into the new sail. They also suggested that they put in a strap to attach the clew to the boom instead of a slide that would go into the channel in the boom. The outhaul will be there to take the brunt of the load, but he said that many racers use a strap instead of a slide to avoid point loading on a loose foot and to make the outhaul adjustments slide easier. I've never heard of such a set up & I'm wondering if anyone here has. Can anyone tell me if this is a good idea or not?? I really trust these guys, but I have NO IDEA what they're talking about. Thanks, Allen Schweitzer s/v Falstaff C-30 Hull# 632

Sail loft is right - you need a clew strap

Mine is a good long length of special Velcro strapping that goes through the cringle at the clew of the sail and then goes around the boom. They are made just for this attachment on loose footed mains, and they work amazingly well. You will be pleased with the sail shape you can achieve and the ease of outhaul adjustment. We put new Sobstad sails on 3 years ago and won the NFS1 division overall trophy for those 3 years at our club. Cheers,

Re: Clew strap

Yes absolutly, jimq26 is right. I've been using one ever since I installed a loose footed main. A velcro spectra stap is what you need. Also suggest you talk to the loft about a floating tack and leech line adjuster at the mast. We use these things and I wouldn't go back.

Hey, Guys: Clew Strap No Clue

So, exactly what does it do, or rather how does it do it? My loose footed main has a four inch (est.) sail slide at the clew. However, under load, it's a real SOB to tighten even with purchase. So, might the spectra strap unload the slide a bit? If so, how come the friction on the boom isn't an impedement to tensioning? *o Rick D.

SAIL SHAPE

THIS TYPE OF CONFIGURATION WORKS , BUT YOU MAY HAVE TOUBLE WITH MAIN SAIL SHAPE,IT MAY WORK BETTER FOR RACING.IT'S WHAT I HERE. MY BOAT WAS SET UP LIKE THIS AND I CHANGED IT BACK TO THE BOLT ROPE THROUGH THE FOOT OF THE BOOM>

Get rid of the sail slide!!!

Trust me Rick - you don't want or need it. Your sail shape will be great and your outhaul adjustments easy using only the clew strap. As long as you have the bolt slide - you will have friction. The clew strap slides back and forth on the boom so easily no matter what the wind loading. Fred - if it ever stops snowing I will get you a pic of the set up. In the meantime - picture a smooth aluminum boom with a 1" wide strap of Velcro wrapped around it (gently), and this strap going through the clew cringle. Add some sort of outhaul device to the same cringle (with a bit of purchase to assist) et voila. Back & forth just like the new KY.

Thanks Guys!!

As always, you guys have helped out a lot. I've been sailing since I was a kid & didn't think there was anything left to learn about rigging. Boy, am I wrong!!! Thanks Again, Allen Schweitzer s/v Falstaff C-30 Hull# 632

Don't Be Scared!!

don't be afraid to ask your sailmaker these questions. If you trust him, and he is knowledgeable he will be happy to thouroughly explain anything you don't understand. Afterall, they are sailors just like us, but more up to date because they deal with it everyday. They tend to know what works well, and what may not work well for each individual. The best part, you get to ask an expert, and it won't cost you. Not even a retainer!!
