Hunter doesn't know
Jim Bohart said (with tongue in cheek) they were for hiking out. That being an obvious impossibility, I assume Hunter has no idea what they put these things in for. They look nice? We've used ours for hanging wet towels, hanging sail ties, stuffig styrofoam cups in, haning the main sheet on at day's end, and perhaps more. This year we took one off. It clearly is an improvement when heeling. The angled indentations are very a comfortable foot rest/support when at 20 degrees. When heeled the other way one has to stick his/her foot under the board or consider breaking it. Very hard on toes.
