Can anyone tell me the purpose of the wood slats in the cockpit of the 23. I'm talking about the ones covering the indentions in the seats near the cabin hatch. Are they grab rails, hiking braces or just decoration?

Cup Holders??
The only use for these slats that I can find is as a cup holder. Note that you must use a soft plastic type which you can bend slightly and jam it in. They also don't work very well in heavy seas!

I'm not sure, but I think they are meant to wedge your feet in as the boat heels..... I'm not sure if you'd want to do that... They don't work as hand holds, (too low)..... I don't think they are just decoration, I think Hunter envisioned SOME use for that..... As long as we're asking questions, I assume that the aluminum strip covered with wood on top of the cabin roof are handholds? But they SUCK as handholds!!! They are uncomfortable and not very strong (they flex easily) If you step on them they REALLY flex. Why didn't Hunter use normal handholds like everyone else? Take Care! Chris

We've used ours for hanging wet towels, hanging sail ties, stuffig styrofoam cups in, haning the main sheet on at day's end, and perhaps more. This year we took one off. It clearly is an improvement when heeling. The angled indentations are very a comfortable foot rest/support when at 20 degrees. When heeled the other way one has to stick his/her foot under the board or consider breaking it. Very hard on toes.

Wood slats
They come in handy for holding water-gatorade bottles or jib sheet tails, but I lost my footing while heeled 35 degrees once and put my foot right through one, scratching my ankle a bit. Teak strips cost me over $14 for 4 feet. I'm more careful now! They do look pretty after a little varnish.

They're the perfect size...
... For holding the feet of the sawhorse I use to support my mast while trailering. The weight of the sawhorse/mast is borne by the fiberglass of the cockpit seats, but the slats help keep it from moving side to side or front-to-back. (I know this isn't the original method for transporting the mast- the manufacturer's mast crutch wasn't with the boat when I purchased it.
