Hello, Can anyone tell me how to determine the manufacture date of a boat? I am looking at an O'day Javelin hull number 3227 2538. Thank you for your help. -Susan A

Well, I can't help you. I tried to cross reference it and it doesn't make sense. If it was made before 1972 it could be moot.

Is your Javelin a new or 'classic' style!

Susan,

If your Javelin is a new version (small wooden door for access to the storage area in the bow of the boat) then there should be a number stamped into the outside of the transom that you can then decode. BTW, if it is this style it is a '72 or newer.

If the access to the storage area in the bow is wide open, the width of the cockpit, then you have a pre '72 Javelin.

Re: Is your Javelin a new or 'classic' style!

Thank you Dan. It's a '72 or newer. I'll look for the number. Right after I bought this boat, the reservoir closest to me that is suitable for sailing was closed to the public due to homeland security concerns. So, sadly I am now preparing to sell it. Thanks again!

Hull# 3227 Class# 2538
The fact that your boat has 2 numbers, which I believe are marked on a small metal plate inside the cockpit tells me that she would be a pre-1973 model. All boats built after 11/01/72 will have a 12-digit hull I.D. Number molded into the outside of the transom, O'DAYs built prior to that date have an O'Day Hull# and a Class#. However, if the numbers you list are what was marked on your boat, I think a few digits are missing. The Hull# refers to how many total O'Days had been built, i.e. you have the 3227th O'Day Sailboat built. Class# refers to how many Javelins, so you have the 2538th Javelin built. The Javelin was introduced in 1962, and by looking at info that I have about other O'DAYs, it seems that O'DAY hull# 3227 would have been built around 1959 or 1960. My guess is that your hull# should be more like 32270 +/- or 13227....in other words, there should be another digit before or after 3227. I'd estimate Javelin Class# 2538 would be a 1969-71 model, figuring on production being in the 300 units per year that was typical for each O'DAY model in those years.

Thank you Sunbird for all the information. The number is very hard to read, and I thought there might indeed be some numbers missing. Will look harder.
