what year is this sail boat

I have have come across a catalina 22 . I'm interested in getting the year it was built, the s/n # 8983 .It needs a lot of work .I wondering if it is worth the work Thanks RS

1979 or 1980

Based on the sail number. The last few digits of the Hull ID number will tell for sure. If it needs a lot of work, you may want to keep looking for a C22 that is in good shape. My boat is only about 2 years newer than the one you are considering, and it is in very good shape. I am sure there are boats on the market that are in good shape.
