What year did the MacGregor start using the water ballast system?

I took the advice of a few folks on this forum and sought out a fellow MacGregor owner to make sure I had everything I needed to sail my Venture 22. To my surprise, the owner told me that the earlier models (mine is a 1984) did not have the valve/water ballast system. Does anyone know if this is true and if so, what year did they start using this system? I'm embarrassed to admit I have looked for this valve on my boat and have not been able to locate it.

Water ballast was first used in the 26D in 1987, then in the 26S in 1990. Only the 26-foot models use water ballast. All prior sizes and years had a weighted swing keel which serves as the ballast. It's not surprising, then, that you could not find a valve on your boat! What you should find is a hand-operated winch which raises and lowers your swing keel. -Paul
