Race, what race

Turn to the crew, request another beverage and trim the sails. If they should take us, well we went racing anyway.....Damn

Do YOU know what your doin??

I've sailed an inland lake for 20+ years...love a good race,..for grins. WAY too often, I've seen "hot dogs" that just watched some Americas Cup match race on TV, and want to similate just feet away tacks/crosses...might depend on the alcohol consumption. (not a clue on right of way) No prob with the "race"...but do they know (and can they handle the boat??) what there doing?...I make it a safety call,...and don't mind giving a wide berth, if I need too. (including trim and adios ;-) Patrick *yks DancesWithWaves (those reading that DON'T know what there doing, or just "think" they do......stay WELL clear of other boats for the "challenge"...STUPID, NOT good seamanship, and the whole point is NOT SAFE!!)

No second thought

In order: Trim sails. If they continue to gain, get kids out with oars. If they pass, make sure torpedos are armed for min range....

Hey, that happened today!

My wife and I were on our Catalina 22, on a port tack out of the North Gap of Buffalo Harbor, both main and 110 jib flying. Winds were about SW at 14kts. A Grampian 26, flying its high-tech genoa came up behind us from a much farther distance (probably 200 yds). I watched helplessly as he gained on us and overtook us once we reached the Lake. 2-3ft waves. He sailed close enough for us to share how nice of a day it was. My wife made fun of me as he easily left us behind.....What a beautiful day for sailing today.

Drop Trousers, and laugh at them, then trim the sails!

Hold On......

Guys its not always a race you know. Under the collision regulations you still have obligations! As both vessel are sailing vessels the rules that apply are Rule 12 (Two sailing vessels) and ALSO rule 13 which requires the vessel being overtaken to keep clear (hold course and speed.) until the other vesssel is past and clear. So although it might be fun to just trim a little and act nonchalantly as you leave him in your wake be aware that your "legal" obligation is to let him by!!!!

All U Get

Depends

I can size up the intentions of the other boat, leave the fast ones go and trim the ones you can. I did have 1 guy try to run me toward the rocks, my response was a "Crazy Ivan". Since he pinched me into the wind, my tack then jibe put me steering aft of his stearn as I tipped my hat. Big ocean for small egos.

Nav Rules

If the vessel changing course is 22.5 abaft the beam and you are are both sailing you have the right of way.

Surprise them in turn.

The other day I was heading from the Manatee River to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge (the Golden Gate of the South)into Tampa Bay. I was motor sailing as I had to be bback in Tampa at a specific time. I was on a beam reach maintaining a speed of 6 knots with an East wind of 10 knots. When I left the river I could see a boat about a mile ahead from my position tracking the same course. As I got to about half a mile behind him he turned to starboard and I figured he was strictly under sail and was seeking a better wind angle to go under the bridge. As I was motoring and moving at a good clip I knew I could make the Bridge on a direct course. All of a sudden the other boat turns back to starboard now close hauled into the wind and looking to intercept my position. At first I was going to get on the VHF and ask "Captain what are your intentions" but I realized they were trying to pounce on us so I kept quiet and pressed on. I would have loved to see their face when we crossed their bow and kept pulling away. He never got closer than 200 yards and then he turned and ran away DDW. I don't think he realized we had the motor on until perhaps lt was to late. For the light wind conditions he was sailing quite fast and being lighter than us would have probably beaten us; at least that is what he probably thought.

I'm a coward

One never knows whether the guy at the helm of another boat understands his obligation or if he's even paying attention. One never knows his condition either. I'm not interested in an impromptu "drag race". In the scenario described, I am required to maintain course and speed until: 1. He is safely clear of me or, 2. I believe that there is a risk of collision, in which case I am bound to take prompt and unmistakable evasive action. So, I'll keep a close watch on him to see whether 1, or 2, develops.

Have fun!

We'd probably trim 4 speed, protect to windward (force him to pass to leeward) and just about the time he exits our dirty air (if he does)...tack away with a "see ya!" wave. If he tacks with us, repeat previous strategy until our 'Fun-meter' is pegged. In addition, we'd note the boat's name and sail number for future reference (i.e. - 'turn about/fair play')...

Leeward huh?

I get to Leeward and I'll luff ya up, regardless of your bad air. Of course, that's only in a Regatta, not just cruising around because I don't know if you know to give ground to the Leeward boat or not.

Rules of the Road

Assuming we were at our best performance and the other boat would overtake us we would hold Course, Speed and Yield. When safely overtaken, give a friendly salute. If I feel we are being forced into jeopardy, running aground or endangering another craft, turn away or execute a maneuver making our intentions clear we are refusing to yield till on a safe pass or intersection. If there is more performance available to us and the course is safe, BRING IT ON IF YOU CAN. But I doubt you will.

The last log dodge

we were in had us in a pickle. We were the Leeward boat and the Windward boat had an obstruction (jetty wall) to Windward. We could pull up so far and then we'd fall off in his wind shadow. Wasn't much to do except maintain course until the turn from the channel. We couldn't luff him up and make him pinch and either duck or fall off because of the obstruction.

Ready....set....go

Put down your beverages, put a clip on the potato chip bag, get out the winch handles, and roll up your sleeves........your in a race. There is no better feeling than overtaking a similar boat, or pulling away from a challenger. So rise to the challenge. If he overtakes you, you have some studying to do. You you pull away, your beverage will taste even better. Racing is fun and tests your skills. Enjoy!!!!!
