While my mast is down, I decided to replace my boat's 10 year-old standing rigging. I got two (verbal) estimates of around $2200 for materials. I went to West Marine and the guy told me around $1200 (plus labor). I went back a few days later and asked another guy and he told me the same price. I had him write it down on one of his cards.
I figured that any estimate like that is just that - an estimate - so I expected it to be a little more. Also, I decided to go with swageless fittings since they would be reusable. They cost about $10 a piece more than the swaged fittings. That's an additional $180.
Then, about an hour ago, the guy from their shop called me and told me the material cost would be $2900 (!). I questioned that and explained what they'd told me originally. He was really stunned. He said they must have not taken into account that some of the wire is 5/16 (vs. 1/4"), but that's standard for my size boat. I also explained that the reason I'd gone with them vs. the yard that pulled my mast was that they were so much cheaper. The result is that I have to pay a $10/day storage fee to the yard, since I'm not having their rigger do the job.
On the one hand, I hate to get somebody in real trouble (the guy who gave me the estimate), but on the other hand, I feel they should stand by their estimate. After talking with him, he said something about not being able to go lower than $2,000, but I feel even this is not in the ballpark of what they'd told me.
I'm not sure whether to really dig my heels in on this or not. I'm thinking of offering to split the difference (around $1600 - $1700), but I think even this would be a struggle. What would you do?
