What would you do first, to a crusty old yanmar 3cyl?

one other thought-- could i try to use the "manual chain overdrive hand start" shaft to attempt to turn the engine over by hand?

Can't hurt. You have the crank handle? You won't be able to turn it fast enough to worry about it starting. Still you should use the crank it came with. It has the slots that will release from the shaft in event it did start.

just had a possibly brilliant idea!

Well I gotta pull this engine. This crazy boatyard wants $200 to drive the forklift over here and lift the engine out and set it on the ground, after I totally loose it from mounts etc. So I have been thinking about building some kinda frame and buying and engine hoist or little 1 ton truck boom from harbor freight and pull it myself. At least I would have a tool I could keep afterwards for my $200. Well in the meantime, I have been stripping the boat of everything and taking it home to clean up or paint. Now I have this big open space in the main cabin area. It looks like a perfect spot to work on an engine! I can slap a 2x4 across the companionway and use a come along to lift it high enough, then use another one to pull it forward enough to lower it on a movers dolly. Then I can lay down some cardboard and plastic and roll it forward. It will be the perfect height for me to sit at the setee and tinker w it. Guess I'm gonna be sending parts to the machine shop and I can just "rebuild" it right in the cabin! Only thing is I won't be able to give it a good paint job.

What do ya think?

Not original but still a good idea. :) Really not that hard to slide it forward onto a pair of 4x4s or 6x6s. Really nice to have complete access to the "engine room".

So I'm not brilliant! But the idea was original to me! I guess if you can think it, it's already been done...

Thx,

Some people use the boom to lift the engine I wonder about the load myself. On the other hand $200 may not be such a bad deal

Oh, if my mast was stepped the engine would be on the ground by now! I'm on the land-locked hard. Gonna need to truck it when I'm done here.

$200 is ridiculous to drive the lift over here and lower the hook to me and ME guide it out. I'm half way done disconnecting the engine, so they won't be doing anything but lifting.

Oh well,

im gonna feel really stupid if this thing is in gear. i just remembered that the clutch cable at the helm felt like it was not connected. it could be in gear and maybe thats why i cant turn the engine. gonna check today.

Even in gear it should turn with the hand crank. Unless the drivetrain is boogered some how that is. So being sure it is in neutral is a a good idea. I started my old 2QM20 while in gear many times. Again, that memory thing.

progress report

Well, i went out to the boat today and made a little progress. i got one motor mount nut off for a total of two front nuts. the back two arent budging. so i thought about taking some pressure off the engine with a come along, and just removing the motor mount brackets from the block. any reason not too? once the motor is out, i can remove the mounts and reinstall the brackets.

Also, I got two of the three injectors out. i had to use a pry bar and keep bumping it w my hand til it finally came out. the last one is stuck hard. i pb blasted it before i left. the i dont know what they are supposed to look like, but they looked brownish/rusty but smooth. there was some carbon on the tips. i attached a poor pic. before i left, i poured Marvel Mystery Oil in the two open injector holes. it took the whole bottle and then all of a sudden it started pouring out of the air intake. is that normal? i guess the valve was open. i closed the decompression levers and it still poured out. the middle injector held half a bottle. i filled it to the top of the opening. guess i didnt really need to.

oh, the trans WAS in gear. i manually shifted it to neutral.

Claude, there are two answers to that. "I can't remember" is the right one unless you need one of those magic pills. I do not. :)
B, seems like a little progress. Can you take the lag bolts out, loosening the mounts from the rails? Sounds like you have a lot of corrosion to deal with.

yes, its a pile of corrosion. not sure about lag bolts. only saw the one 15/16 nut on top of the mounts. was thinking about breaking the brackets that bolt to the engine and sit on the mounts.

here is a bad cell pic of one of the injectors (if i got it linked right).
