"Somewhat" of a rhetorical question. If your wife (or husband) said you could spend around 25,000 on a new boat and you wanted something to sleep a family of 6 for 2-3 days at most what would be high on your list? Assuming lake and river sailing here - not bluewater or coastal cruising.

25,000 on a new boat

David I'd say she was really kidding you. With that budget it just ain't gonna happen for a NEW boat to accomplish your sleeping requirements, unless you can pack that many people in a Catalina 22 (kinda like stuffing a Volkswagen with 25 college kids!). I'd start with either a much higher budget or a used (previously owned (PO) )boat. New is at least $1.5 to 2K per foot. Good luck, at least she's letting you dream! :) Stu

New or New to you?

David, A new boat with those parameters does not exist. But, take heart! There is probably a good used one that will fill your needs. I wouldn't buy a new one even if I had the resources. Good luck! Jon

Used, of course. This is a great boat, and the one would upgrade to if we weren't so happy with our 27 footer from the same era. (Late 70's to early 80's. David Lady Lillie

Santana 22?

John 6 on a Santana 22, regardless of how new, would place most folks abovedecks. Or VERY comfy togther down below. Nice boat, though. Stu

Your wife is smart if she wants you not to buy a

boat. Unrealistic parameters. My wife did the same thing years ago but to the other extreme. After pestering her for 20 years, she told me she was ready for us to buy a boat as long as she can pick it. Well, after several weeks she selected a $1.2 million dollar Oyster. "I can't afford that" I said, "too bad, you'll have to save till you can" she said. Luckily, she felt so bad, she finally gave the okay a few weeks later (for a Hunter not the Oyster). Oh, her IQ is 160 and she likes to toy with my mind every once is a while. abe

Sorry - original question mistated!

Sorry all - I meant new to us, not a new boat. I was of course thinking of a used boat in that price range. We currently have a 1983 O'Day.

Catalina 30

There are catalina 30's around in that price range. When we were looking we saw several under 30k and a couple for around 20k. We opted for a pearson 323 because we wanted a boat that is a little better offshore. A catalina 30 is the most abundant boat at our marina!!!! Some are really fixed up nice and one owner just installed radar. For 25k you are looking at an older boat that probably needs a little work. David Perkins is right about the macgregor if you plan to trailer. With a Catalina 30 if you want to get it out of the water you will need a travel lift. If you want to haul it around you will need a 18 wheeler flatbed truck. With the Mac you can haul it behind a light truck and park it in your driveway. Remember the purchase price is often not that important in the cost to own a boat. Slip fees and maintenace can really add up fast!!!! It cost me over $300 to just get my boat out of the water. A bottom job about $1000. With my Mac all it cost was $100 for paint!!! Just having a mechanic look at a diesel engine can cost as much as a small outboard. If money is important go to a small trailerable boat and take a tent. On a couple of trips with our mac our son wanted to camp on shore while we anchored nearby. Tom

trailersailer for a lake or river

Because one of David's criteria was use on a lake or river, I would suggest there are some big conveniences and cost savings to owning a trailersailer with the trailer. Most lakes and rivers don't have a lot of marinas for hauling and storing, and staying in the same lake can be tedious. I owned a 1980's Catalina 25 without the trailer and I found it to be pretty spacious and probably capable of handling 6 people comfortably with the settee interior (people like to invent their own jigs for turning the cabin into Queen-sized beds). They are available with pop-tops, which may be anathema to ocean sailing but would be a great feature on the river. Price tag: around $9k. In fact, I think the new Catalina 250 could almost be bought new for your project price tag. Hunter also has a nice similar trailersailer in that size range.
