What was used on my teak ?

The teak on my boat has been treated with something that resembles more of a paint than an oil (it is actually chipping). Thinking it was a Cetol product, I tried to touch it up but what I bought was not the same stuff. What I bought had more of a transparent finish. I know I am not very clear here but does anyone have any suggestions for what the finish is ?

I would guess that your teak was treated with Cetol 'Marine' - this is a product that has been around for some time; it has an orangey tint to it and if it goes on thick enough it will obscure the wood grain like a paint would. It is durable but relatively un-attractive.
A few years ago they came out with another version of Cetol called 'Natural Teak' which resembles a varnished finish and looks nicer. This is probably what you bought.
Be careful as there is also a 'Clear Gloss' version of Cetol that many folks use on top of either the 'Marine' or 'Natural Teak'. There are also about 10 other varieties of Cetol now made for home use.

Caleb, your take on it seems pretty accurate. It does have an orangey tint and it is covering up much of the wood grain. Can I purchase this stuff anymore ?

I believe that it is still sold as Cetol 'Marine'.
Defender carries it as does the store at SBO (Chandelry) if I am not mistaken.

I believe this is the original marine formula. Locally Hamilton's also sells it.

I once bought a Morgan 382 that had a dark brown finish on the teak that looked like paint. The PO gave me what was left of the finish which was Cetol deck paint. It took weeks to get the mess off the teak.
