About 10 years ago I lived near San Pedro California and came across a boat I fell in love with....I only saw it once, it was for sale and when I returned in a couple of days it was gone....I will describe it the best I can....It was about 18 to 22 feet long cutter rigged with a canoe stern...it was fiberglass and kind of olive drab in color. I believe it had a full keel...it looked capable of bluewater cruising...I'm pretty sure it was not a homebuilt...I had a friend who said it was a tumlaren, but he was drunk most of the time those days, so, who knows? Can anyone tell me if such a boat was produced in the 80's or 90's? I would love to fnd one...I am headed to the Caribbean in a couple of years and plan to singlehand south. I want to revisit some of the places I loved so much when I cruised on a 42 foot anglemann-davies ketch in the late 70's thanks for the help Steve

Thanks for the tumlaren pics....beautiful boat....but the boat i saw was way smaller, it seemed beamier and was produced probably in the 80's or 90's,maybe the 70's...it was definitely fiberglass...it was on a trailer and could have easily been pulled by a pickup...i don't know if it could have been launched from the trailer it did have a full keel.

They were canoe stern, full keel, available with a 7 HP inboard diesel etc etc A very neat design, nicely finished & well built. Claimed to be a "blue water boat". Built by Exe Fibercraft in South Exeter, Ontario, Canada in the late 70's & 80's and maybe later. They also made a 29 ft version, also canoe stern. I was tempted to buy one myself, tho it was really smaller than I wanted. Sorry, don't have any Internet address for them.

I know a guy who sailed one from Hawaii to
Port Townsend. Took him about 3 months. Nordicas are old world looking and heavy and strong, but any reputable modern boat will do what you want in more comfort and a lot faster. Consider a Catalina 27. They've circumnavigated, they're everywhere, inexpensive, sail great. Or a Catalina 25 swing keel for the Carribean. You're not sailing the North Sea or the Roaring Forties.

The Nordica and Halman boats were very similar in design. The only difference was the keel shape, and the portlights. The way they were molded is different as well. They tend to go for between $4500 and $6000 used, more so if in tip top shape. The cockpits are small, and I don't think they are self draining. Other than that they are sturdy boats, and generally well respected. When I was looking for a boat in the 20' range this was one of the choices. I have to agree with one of the posts, that is one homely-looking vessel. But it looks like it would sail through a hurricane, and probably a lot of fun to sail, too. And the most useful boat is the prettiest one after all, since it will be the one to leave the dock while the others stay tied.

yo boat's so ugly
I love the Flicka, I just don't like the price...For what I'd pay for a good Flicka I could buy a Nordica and cruise for a year. To each his own I still think she's beautiful. But then I think Swans are God awful ugly.I guess it's time for a yo boat's so ugly contest. Yo Boat's so ugly even the barnacles won't be seen near it.

She rode out the storm even after the sea wall breached but was holed by a powerboat and sunk, she then was beat to death on the bottom. Her back was broken and so was my heart.
