what type of goo to use

I'm in the process of installing a Whale Gusher manual bilge pump in my 81 H33. I'm just wondering what the best type of goo to seal the fitting that will go through the hull is. Of course, this will not be an underwater thru-hull fitting, just an exit for the bilge water. It is going to be up near the top of the hull on the starboard stern. I feel 5200 is a bit too strong, what about silicone?? Is there a special "marine" sealant used for similar applications or is good old fashion silicon just as good?

Mildew-proof marine silicone is adequate.

Or you can go one step up to LifeCaulk.

Goo for it!

I agree with George. Replaced the vent hose this year with 1" variety. Old through hull from factory had silicone. It lasted 11 years. I replaced the through hull and caulked with with same "goo" that George is talking about. If Admiral Judy were writing this, she would remind me to tell you that "Wet Ones" are great for cleaining the goo off of you, the tools, the boat, etc. I don't know why, weren't they made for cleaining baby's bottoms? Goo for it! :) RB

3M 101 Sealant

I use 3M 101 Sealant for thru-hulls especially underwater. You can use it above the waterline also. It is not as strong an adhesive as 5200 so you can get the thru-hull out or anything else you are planning to have to remove someday or if you ever need to. It is a polysulphide sealant and cures with moisture / water.

Life Seal

I actually prefer Boat Life's 'Life Seal' (over Life Caulk). I use it to bed all fittings and plastic deckplates. It's a silicone/poly blend.
