What to name a boat

I'm starting my third summer with my Capri 22. And to-date we've not come up with a name that seems to fit me. This morning I was having breakfast with some great buddies and we got to talking about sailing. Hmmm wonder who brought up that topic. One if the guys said it sounded like I was living the Little River Band song "Cool Change". Right then it struck me he was right and "Cool Change" would make a great name. I'm wondering if there is another Capri 22 out there with that name. Then wondered if it really mattered
So
1) does anyone know if this one is already used?
2) Does it really matter?
3) is the name silly?

Boat names are extremely personal..
No it doesn't matter if it's been used before (they all have been).
Who cares, do what you like! Enjoy your boat, that's all that matters...

For the record I've never known the name to apply to a boat, so GO FOR IT...
Common names?
Obsession
Jenny
Syzygy
Oddessy
Float A Loan
Blast

There are whole tomes written on these things... Again, I think your choice is more than unique enough.

As stated above, boat names are a very personal thing. Some times the name means something special to the owner, other times the name just sounds "cool" to them. Some names you see and scratch your head as to what does that mean? Must mean something to someone.

After you choose a name, the next big decision will be "what font and what colors?"

Here are several Websites having to do with naming a boat, and one (the BOAT/US one) lets you play the the name and what font it will be in to see how the whole thing will look.

Personal, whimsical, funny or my personal favorite, lack of inspiration. Locally we have 3 boats called Carpe Diem, nice enough except they all popped up just after Robin Williams movie Dead Poets Society was released. Stay Thirsty after the XX beer commercials came out and Black Pearl, complete with the movie logo.

My folks had a boat called Therapy and it was aptly named. It was a refuge from a hectic time in our family. We had a boat called Sunkissed as it was a bright orange hull. Our Capri is called Chingaletta for my father who got us into sailing many years ago and is no longer with us. Chingaletta was his go to word when he could not come up with the propper name. sort of his whatchamacallit or thingamabob. It is of Latin American roots and loosely translated means little frigging thing. Fitting for my Pop and our little boat.

If you like a name use it but don't feel like it is a requirement to have one.

Well;

My first boat, a San Juan 21 I named "Overtime" as that is where I got the $$$ to purchase it.

Second boat ( Caprin 22 # 297) came with the name "Sailvation" which I thought we a good name, so I kept it.

My latest, Capri # 427 came with the name "Blue Chip". Not too sure about that but will keep it for this year as too much other things on the boat to get fixed.

Getting set to change the sheaves in my turning blocks from the degraded plastic to the aluminum ones from Catalina. I decided to use hex head bolts instead of the phillips head machine screws. Turns out that is what is shown on the Catalina Direct page.

Ditto what Shnool said -

So far:
Impetuous - 1987 17'Boston Whaler Montauk

2006 C16.5 that never got named cause the launch area had a bumper rail that would have taken off the decal sooner than later.

Grace Alone - 2003 Capri 22

Sounds like a great name to me. You've avoided the dreaded 13-letter jinx and it rolls off the tongue, so you should be good to go. Don't forget to perform the necessary name-changing protocols including tributes to Poseidon.

Our first boat together was Spirit, a Capri 18.
The Capri 26 was going to be Jester, until I dug into her history.
The first owner was a woman, who named her Temptress,
so we un-renamed her back to Temptress in her honor.

Onlyest problem is - in the Navy the skipper is referred to by the ship's name. :(

Oh if we are going over what our own boats names were..
My Capri 22 not named by me: Galileo's Dance (it was creative enough that I left it alone).
My Capri 25 has had 3 names (yeah, you'll see why): It came to me as "Happy Flapper" then in a pinch I named it "Chutin' Dawg" because we have shooting dogs (according to the American Field Definition, they are fast big running hunting dogs). The play on words with "chute" was for spinnaker runs. I've since renamed the boat (with proper ceremony) to "Anticipation." The latest name change was because I spent the entire winter of 2012/2013 basically rebuilding the boat from scratch, including new sails, new bottom job, and new topsides, all new hardware on the cabintop, and generally busted my keester to get it "race ready." I was 1 week ahead of the entire club putting my boat in, literally waiting at the launch ramp for the dockmaster to put a dock in for me to tie the boat up... The name was quite appropriate.

My prior boat was "Goochy's Wish," because my ex wife was nicknamed "goochy," and she was a demanding B&t^h... so everything was according to her design, or it wasn't "allowed." Hence why she's my ex-wife now. For the record I could only sail that boat 25 times in 10 years. The last year I sailed it 12 times, because I wasn't really listening to her BS anymore.

My father? He had:
Reenie Won (mom's name is Maureen).
Reenie Too
Reenie III
Skylark (boat was named that, and Dad was superstitious about changing it).

My brother had:
Half Fast (never bothered putting the name on the boat, nor did he ever wash it, or clean it).
Nun Ya (as in Nun Ya business).

Let me make one GOOD suggestion to you... keep in your mind any name you have must be used for VHF communications... and should be intelligible. As in "pan pan pan, this is the sailing vessel ______"

If you are single -- name it "After You". If you meet some chick and invite her for a ride. She may say -- what is your boat's name. Then you respond "why I named it "After You" " of course :)

"Cool Change" was the name of the Catalina 22 I sold a couple of years ago. It was the name of the boat when I bought it, and the couple I sold it to thought it was cool (pun intended).

Given the date of the OP, this issue may be settled. Just the same, I caution against a too "silly" a name as you may be calling for a motor launch after each sail and "ahoy launch this is "dream boat" (or any other silly name) requesting pick-up" gets old fast.
Just the same, if I had to name my boat again, it'd be "CAT PARLIAMENT" for sure.

Two good names I saw at my club ....

Placebo --- owned by a Dr.

Deliverance -- owned by an Episcopal priest.

I am thinking about re-naming my boat "Cobra"

Since my sail # is 427 and I always wanted a 427 Cobra :)
