What to look out for?

I'm looking at a Bristol 19 for sale. It's been a while since I've had a boat and I have very little info about it, not even sure the age. I might get more info today. From what I've read on-line these boats have a pretty good reputation, but I'm wondering if there are any inherent issues I should look for??? Thanx for your input.

I am currently in Bar Harbor and would be glad to help you out. I do not know this particular boat but can help you identify issues common to all FRP boats. Where is the boat? That picture is either not current or is not in Maine. If it is in Maine, hopefully it is covered as we have been getting a lot of mixed precip and freeze/thaw cycles.

Hi Tim and thanx for the reply. The boat is here and is covered, albeit only with "the blue tarp". I just came back from looking at it and she doesn't appear to be in bad shape and was mostly dry. Could certainly use some cosmetic TLC, but I guess that's to be expected. Do you live and work here? I know I could certainly use help with this if I buy it. They want $1,500 as is, no trailer, no stands but I can leave it in place till spring. Do you want to have a look at it? Jeff 664-3355

I own a Bristol 19 (Sailstar Corinthian if made before about 1971). They are wonderful boats. They sail really well, and I like the feel of sitting so low in the water, that the below waterline cockpit gives. As with any boat pushing 40 years old, there may be some issues to look out for.

Check the chainplates for soundness and check that they are solidly bolted. Look closely at the condition of the rudder. My 67 Corinthian has a wooden rudder that is in good shape, but shows slight gaps where the pieces are joined, when it dries out. Put some pressure on the rudder to be sure nothing is too loose. Look around the rub rail and inside at the hull joint for collision damage and evidence of leaking. The gelcoat on my 19 had several little voids under it, that I had to dig out and fill. Nothing serious, and I think it was a manufacturing defect rather than blisters.

Keep in mind that the cockpits are not self bailing. You will need to keep a cover on at dockside, and should have a bilge pump for rainwater.

Jeff, I am currently working as a consultant at the hospital 3 days(T, W, Th) a week. I am otherwise in the Portland area. I can help you take a look at it. I am only available after work though(dark). I may be able to work something out and get here a little early next Monday afternoon. It depends on what I have scheduled in Portland Monday morning.
