I have just removed all the varnish/cetol/whatever, from the exterior teak of my catalina 30. What is the best finish to use? I am considering either teak oil or tung oil. Has anyone had any experience with the rubbed penetrating oils? It seems to me that rubbing another coat on every three or four months would be easier than sanding and removing. My big concern is the uv protection in the Texas Sun. Three coats of premium varnish is good for about a year. I would appreciate any insights anyone may have. Thanks, John

I use Sikkens Cetol

It's easy to sand and goes on easy. Varnish is hard to sand hard to remove. Sand Cetol, recoat at end of season and the beginning of the next, three coats. Besure to rub the teak with Acetone before the first coat, takes the oil off the wood. Follow all the directions on the can. Problem with oil is that it gathers dust and must be cleaned each time before oiling again. Good luck

Teak....

A couple of years ago, I had a boat with miles of teak. I carefully stripped and cleaned it. Took forever and was not fun. I then applied teak oil. It looked great! For about three weeks....boo, hoo. It then began turning dark, then black. I tried applying more oil. The sun kept turning it black. I then stripped it again (ugh!). A friend suggested Sikkens Cetol. Just like the other posters state, three coats and its easy to use. I don't think its as nice looking as varnish, but certainly looks "good enough." I also apply one maintenance coat each fall. Each new coat rejuvenates the coat under it. I love this stuff. You will too.

Try this

Cetol looks like baby poop. My yard recommends varnished thinned 50%. That will really soak it into the wood. Then come back with 100% coats of varnish.

I used Honey Teak

This product received high marks in Practical Sailor and looks more like traditional varnish than does Cetol, in my opinion. It's only available from Signature Finish (I'll try to include a link below.) It's a two part finish and somewhat expensive to get started, but seems to be pretty easy to maintain. (I suggest you call the number on the site as they are most helpful with info to get you started.) I used it and like the ease with which it went on and the final look. You've done the hardest part already, so take your time to decide on what will serve you best.

SEMCO

I just re-did all the teak on my C22. I used a product called SEMCO. It has the ease of application of teak oil with the long lasting qualitites of varnish. The result is natural looking, not glossy. I am very happy with it.
