Hello all,
What would be the best boat to buy for "R & R" sailing,, A Bene 473, or a Jeanneau 49 (sun odessy)
I just cant make up my mind.

Pro's and con's??

For R&R, the "best" boat is a sunfish or Sailfish or Laser. Everything else requires work.

Sorry, it was my poor attempt at humor. Realistically, the larger the boat, the less time the owner has to rest or relax. There is too much to do, maintain, clean, upgrade, track, enjoy, etc... It may be just one person's opinion but my experience is that I had more time to relax and enjoy the boat when I had small(er) ones.

The bene 473 and Jeann. 49 is barely 2 feet different in size. So i guess my question should be Bene or Jeanneau?

Well, it says "Beneteau 473" under your handle.. do you already own one or is that just expressing your unconscious leaning towards it over the Jeanneau?

It has been my experience that any time someone asks "which one", you will receive a ton of people who will recommend the one they have or had over another. Particularly in larger purchases since most people have not owned both boats in question and can only express their own experiences, not really an objective comparison based on actual use. So it really comes down to your own individual wants and needs. I've found that when I'm looking to purchase anything, after looking over dozens of different brands and models, one will 'speak to me' in a sense. Get out there and look at them in person.. touch it, smell it, talk to it.. you will know the right one when you see it.

And in a very real way, what Don expressed was dead on.. smaller boats require less maintenance and upkeep which allow you to spend more time enjoying the water. Of course, the best "R&R" boat would be someone elses that you can just jump on and go

I have owned sailboats before, swedish and finnish made, 35 feet. Sailed / competed in bigger boats, up to 45. Never in Bene or Jeann. boats. Its some time ago now, unfortunately been out of the boats for some time.
I had "settled" for a 473, until a "wise man" told me to look into the Jeann. For me its a lot of money, either boats, and the sligtly newer and expensive oceanis 43/46 .... Well i like the finish and the interior better in the "older" boats.
I find it interesting to read about the inputs, it might be issues i have not though about, weaknesses for either boats, or the opposite etc etc. -and i do want a bigger boat than i had!
Preferable with bowthruster, el winches, and main and foresail furlers.. Ok? ;-)

You did not mention whether these boats are ex-bare boats.
If so, be very cautious; most bare boats have been sailed VERY hard by many, many people who either did not care or know enough to treat them prudently.

I believe the ex-charters are also built to a different specification, designated as such with a slightly different model name.
