Touring some of the Newport mansions is interesting, but the kids might find it boring. Theres also the cliff walk, it wraps around the coast and you get a good look at the mansions and grounds, of course theres several beaches to go to.In the middle of town there is several shops, arcades, army navy store the kids might like. As far as restaurants I've lived in RI my whole life and they come and go like all tourist towns. There are alot of fine dinning places but you'll spend a small fortune with the the children. Many places have posted menus outside so you can check it out first. If I think of some other things I'll write back

Hello, O.K. So your going to Newport. Well there is always the usual guided tours and nick knack shops. But the kids might like going over the bridge to Point Judith Light. It's a Coast Guard Search and Rescue Station. If you call ahead and they are not busy (which is highly unklikely) The might give you a tour. But you can walk around the property at your leasure. (beautifull) Now drive down the road to Galillee and check out the Stations Boat house (possible tour) Pleanty of shops and eateries (not as pricey as Newport) Great beach too. You can check out the fishing boats) and the Dutch west Inn. Also right next to point Judith Light is Mike's Light house resteraunt. There are so many things for family's to do cruising down towards Watch Hill. Check your tour book. Oh Stay away from Moon stone Beach!! Hope I helped. I know this is more about Point Judith but I have many found memories from there. P.S. Ask one of the Coasties to tell you the Story about (Judy) )She is the resident Ghost)a nice little girl but a bit mischeivious.

I could write you a book

Just did the same thing this time last year. First, go by the Herrshoff (sp?) Museum up the coast from Newport, still on the bay. Across the street from there is there is the America's Cup Hall of Fame museum and see the real Stars and Stripes (new cup class class, not 12m). Also see Intrepid, and other classical wood boats. Great visit. In Newport, take a charter on a 12 meter, maybe even take the helm, I did. Sail on the replica of the first America's cup boat "America". Visit Newport Yacht Club, and New York Yacht Club. You can charter a few smaller boats too for a day sail. Not to mention eating lobster, visiting Newport's mansions, walking on the waterfront, or the cliff walk along the shore side of the mansions. Plenty of shopping, cool nautical things. The large boat yard was really cool to see very large yachts in and out of the water. They will let you do a little sight seeing there too. Overall there is plenty to see and do, just look around. This may not be really geared to kids, but Newport is really all about sailing and its history.
