we are looking to upgrade in the next year or 3 to a bigger retirement boat. we want one we can store on a trailer, standing headroom, head seperate from main area. I have owned a 222 in the past and love the quality of these boats. any thoughts? bob

I have a 1985 Oday 26. Great boat but a little short on the hear room (clearence) for anyone of 5'10" or higher. I need to bend down just a little. The 27 has enough hear clearence fo me at 5'11" and a step out swin area in the transom. I like my 26 w/diesel and some time if I can I will swap for a 27.

The 26 is trailerable (with the right trailer and vehicle), the 27 and the 28 are both deep, fin-keel designs (4' draft on the 27, some were 5', the 28 had a 4'6" fin-keel, option on the early models was a K/CB with a 3'6" draft). The 272 had a wing-keel (2'11" draft) and was trailer transportable, in other words, not really trailerable (9' beam and 5000+ #) but could be trailered home for the winter. The 280 was a 272 with a different deck and would be about the same weight. The 272 LE would weigh about the same as the 272 (272 LE had a diesel inboard as standard, was option on 272).
The 27 and 28 weighed more than most would want to trailer (7000#+ on the 28, 6000# +/- for the 27).

Just check them over really wel to be sure all the through deck fittings have been reseated and the core is in good shape. Hopefully if the fittings have been reseated the workman/owner took the time to do it right. I am learning this the hard way.
We are small people, but the v-birth is still too small for us, we sleep in the salon. The v-birth is good for storing your overnight bags, sails and such. And good for Kids.
I like the way my Oday sails.

I think that if I had to choose between the O'Day 26, 27, 272 or the 28, it would be the O'Day 28. We have one on the river where I sail and that boat has the sweetest lines to it. The halyards are right on the mast where they should be and the boat is so simple that I would have no trouble at all single handing it. The keel/centerboard OD 26 would be my second choice.
