What size tire to buy for C22 Trailer

I just bought a C22 and I am hoping to go pick it up Monday. One of the things the marine surveyor suggested was to replace the tires on the trailer before any long term travel. Since I will be driving it 500 miles home, I figured I should take some new tires / rims with me and replace them at the boat yard before I bring it home. What size tire should I get for my C22? Is there any specific brand of weight rating I should look for? Additionally, do I need any kind of special jack to raise the trailer with the boat on it to change the tires, or will the basic jack that came with my truck do?

Thanks!

Did you call and ask the PO to have a look at what is on there now?

Most common is 15 inch, the rim being a 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern. As recommended above, just call the P.O. and have him snap a pic of the sidewall to tell you the size for sure. Where I live a spare tire mounted to a galvanized rim at the trailer store is $90.

Get a 15" Load Range "D" radial tire, if possible. Most people settle for load range C. Not a smart place to cut corners.

The only way to know for sure if your truck jack will work is to give it a try. Or get your hands on a small floor jack and take that along with you, along with a grease gun and a 4-way lug wrench.

Congrats on the new boat!!

Definitely find out what is on the trailer now. Most had 15" wheels - I think I've heard of a few that had 14". Gene is spot-on - don't skimp ... Buy load range D. Mine are ST225/75D15. I live in Arizona and heat kills tires out here in the summertime. To keep the heat low, I don't drive over 65-mph when towing, and I use bias ply tires - they flex less than radials, and thereby generate less heat. I picked up some nice Carlisle tires (made in Canada ... Which I also liked) at Discount Tire and a new set of wheels for a very reasonable price.

If you have 14" tires, Goodyear makes a great bias ply tire, in 14" size only, specifically for U-Haul. Those guys know a thing or two about trailer tires. I have the specs on those tires if you need them - they can be special ordered from Goodyear tire stores. I use them on my travel trailer and they have been great. Another popular brand of tire that I bought delaminated in less than a year.

As one who trailers 6,000+ miles a year, I've used 14" Load Range-C tires, blew them out, went to 15" Load Range-D tires, worked well the first year, but blew them both out the second year, well, actually one blew out, 8 hours later the other started to separate. Went to Load Range-E tires 3 years ago, multiple trips from San Diego to Florida and back, this summer over 3,600 miles from Florida to the Upper Peninsular of Michigan and back, and we're leaving in the morning for a cruise out of Panama City Florida. Haven't had an issue since going to Load Range-E tires. We normally travel 60-65 MPH on the freeway. Now my boat is a wing keeled MK-II, and it's loaded. I recommend going to a truck scale and having your rig weighed loaded as it would be going down the road. You will be surprised how much you'll be towing. My rig as shown in the photo below is slightly over 4,600 Lbs.
