I am replacing the tiller on my hunter 25 that was damaged in a storm last year. I see one that is 36 inches long and one that is 44 inches long. The best measurment I could get on the original tilleron mine is about 36 inches. The one sold on this site for the 25 is 44 inches which seems too long from measurment in my cockpit. What was the stock size? Maybe you just cut the tiller to fit your boat. Thanks for any help!

I just restored my boat's original 1974 tiller. Seems a shame that the ash can get so black and ugly over years without proper attention (and then to find the much newer ash threshold under my companionway hatch is doing the same thing). Next time I am on the boat I shall measure it for you.

I've got a 1978 Hunter 25 which has the same tiller. I'll be out at the boat in a few days and will measure it for you.

Skipper Mike--?

Does your rudder head stand up higher out of the cockpit seat than mine does? If so, your tiller may not be identical to the earlier boats (it may be straighter and with less rise). My rudder head is about 1/2" away from the fiberglass trim/reinforcing that's flat atop the cockpit seat. If I'm not wrong, the '78 and later boats (those with quadrilateral cabin windows or with four portlights, and especially the raised deck) will have theirs about 3-1/2" or so higher.

If there's a way for you and I to compare, we can all be sure. ;)

Good thinking..... I'm actually not sure how much it sticks up. I'll see if I can find any good photos to show and compare. I'll also get measurements next time I'm out at the marina.

I don't know the exact measurements, but here's a photo I took a while back that shows how it's set up. What you think?

Ok Kenny, I sure will. I'm out of town until this weekend, so it'll probably be Monday when I get out to the lake.

My apologies, I finally got around to measuring the tiller for you. Here's some pictures.

The measurement along the top of the tiller to the tip is 35.5 inches. Keep in mind, it's curved up in the middle. See attached photo.

Let me know if this works or if it needs more clarification.

Do you know if I can remove this hose clamp? The prior owner put this on here and other than it looking terrible and 'biting' my knee a couple times, I don't know if it's really doing anything. I was initially afraid to remove it, thinking my rudder might fall out...lol.

What is this thing actually doing, do yo know?

Thanks!

Offhand, I'd say the bands are keeping that collar from crumbling away, and as a WAG, the bolt or screwhead visible suggests that that collar keeps the rudder post from bottoming out.
I'd take it apart if I were you, just to learn.

Nice blog, Mike.

Looks like the clamp is just to keep the rudder bearing from falling apart. I made a new rudder bearing for mine out of teflon. I can have one made for you as I have the spec and my newphew has a machine shop. You really need to repllace it. Thanks for the measurements they are a real help and I am sure now which tiller I need. Thanks a lot
