My sails are 8oz. for a 37' Irwin. The jib needs some stitching. What size thread can I use? The highest my machine can use is v-69 but a friends can do v-92, or so he says. I v-69 sufficient? The area is about 2 feet in a non-critical area.

Polyester T-90 from sailrite would be good.

The only problem you may have is needle size. The needle has to be big enough for the T-90. Sailrite ships the next day and with a phone call, you can get you the right needle. You would be surprised at what a machine can do. I did most of my first canvas work on my wifes 1950's singer. I finally did buy a better Tuff Sew Machine. Winter must be coming... r.w.landau

Triple stitch with V69 .....

8oz. usually equates to V90. With V69 ..... and still getting the same seam strength For better adhesion/strength apply PECO double sided seaming tape under the seams before stitching. I sometimes use PECO on small spinnaker panels and forget the stitching. You'll need to let the PECO 'set'/cure for a week or so. With V69 ..... and also getting MORE seam strength than V90 For bombproof permanent seam setting, apply a thin ribbon of 3M FAST CURE flexible 5200, let cure, then overstitch. You'll definitely need to mask all the seaming when you use 5200 !!!!!! Ive been using FAST CURE on all my corner reinforcements, batten pocket reinforcements, with GREAT results. If you want stronger stitching without going with V90, go with the (expensive) Tenara PTFE .... its totally resistant to UV, and will 'glide' through a #14 needle. Instead of a double row, use a triple row. The PECO tape and FAST CURE 5200 is available from sailrite. If you MUST use V90 and your machine has trouble with this heavier thread, soak it first in a Teflon based or silicone based lubricant but you may need to increase/decrease the top tension a wee bit.
