What size prop would be needed to switch a two-blade to a three-blade on a 1980 Hunter 33? Wlso what would be a good source for the prop??

three blade

On my 1981 H33 I have a Michigan Wheel three bladed prop. it is a 14RH12, I'm thrilled with the performance from it. When I need to motor this prop is it. Though I have to admit, the engine on my boat is a 24hp Westerbeke, not the standard yanmar so that probable makes a big differance. I do loose some performance from a fixed three blade prop but for the type of sailing we actually do, coastal cruising and short off-shore passages, this set-up is perfect for us. If you want to race than of cour$e a folding prop would be better. My spare prop is a two blade fixed prop, 16x10.

14x11

Joe, We swapped a 2 blade feathering prop for a fixed 14x11 3-bladed prop on our '79 H33 this spring and were very pleased. Prior to this year, motoring was a challenge and we had near zero reverse performance. Now, we can confidently motor against the tidal current in the river and even make some forward progress! I believe we bought the prop from Advantage Propellers, http://www.a1discountprop.com/inboardprops.htm, although I have the e-mails on the home PC so I can't confirm that. Make sure that you order and they send you everything that you need to mount the prop on the shaft, though. The guys at our boatyard complained they didn't have the right part (I think it was the propeller nut) and had to modify something to actually get the prop on the boat in the time available. Changing to 3 blade

I changed my 14x12 2 blade to a Campell Sailor 14x8 3 blade and am very happy with this pictch. Getting a lot less torque while backing, performance over all is outstanding.

3 blade with 3GM30

Bought a 3 blade "Mickey Mouse Ear" style Michigan prop last winter when I swapped the 2GM out for a 3GM 30. Couldn't find anyone who had done that and nkew what prop they had. Ended up with a 14 X 13 3 blade in place of the 14 X 12 2 blade based on the rcomendation of the expert at Ocean Propeller in Toms River NJ. Boat speed with this configuration is very close to what it was with the 2 blade, but acceleration and power are incredable. I managed not to run aground this season so I had no opportunity to test un-grounding power, but had no trouble pulling a friend off a grounding. When I hit the fuel lever hard the nose climbs up like a power boat. I'll have the prop re-pitched over the winter (included in the $250 price) to get better speed at cruising RPM's. And I don't see that I've lost much sailing speed with the third blade. It's only the size of a hand after all.

3 blade prop

I was advised by jacksonville prop to use a 14x10 three blade with my yanmar 2qm15(15hp) which normally turns a 14x12 two blade. 79hunter33.

3 Blade Campbell

Joe, I installed a Campbell Sailor three blade prop on my 1980 H33 three seasons ago. I have a Yanmar 2GM15 that was matched to a Michigan 14x12x2 that I replaced with the Campbell 14x8x3. The results were greater forward thrusts in heavey seas and profound improvements in reverse thrust. There is some prop- walk to port when applying hard reverse in stopping or anchoring situations. I've noticed no significant differences in drag while sailing. the Campbell Prop was definately one of the most cost-effective upgrades I've done to date at a cost of less than $400.00. Good luck!
