We are purchasing a 1987 Hunter Legend 37 and the prop needs to be replaced. The boat is in south Florida and we are in north Florida. I do know that it is a 1" shaft and a Yanmar 3HM35F engine. Can anyone help me with size and pitch?

Hunter Customer Service

Have you tried asking Hunter Customer Service? It doesn't matter that your boat is long out of warranty, they will help you if they can:

customerservice@huntermarine.com

It may take them a day or so to get back to you, and they may not have data on your particular model on file any longer, but it's worth a try.

Let us know how it goes.

Replaced my original 2-blade on a 35.5 with a 16X11X1 - fixed 3 blade and really liked the results. I don't race and motored a fair amt. and the 3 blade fixed worked great. Very similar boats, same engine and operating range of rpm, I'd look at gross weight difference. Hopefully, someone with 37 will speak up. Bought my 35.5 in Pensacola and kept it at Laid Back Boat Club in Massalina Bayou for 2 1/2 years before hauling it to Texas. I really miss anchoring behind Shell Island!!!

Just found a great reference in "Owners Reviews" under "Boat Info." Tab. Read all of them, but the 1st one by Hugh Schmidt on an '89 model has good detail on motoring characteristics and what he did to improve. 17", 3 blade MaxProp was his answer.

Motoring characterisitcs: With the stock prop we cruised 2400 RPM, 6.5-7 knots, three quarts of fuel/hour. With the 17"-3 blade Max-Prop we cruise 2000 RPM, 6.5-7 knots, two quarts of fuel/hour. With the stock prop, reverse worked well, but the stern would walk to port while the boat gathered way. With the Max-Prop, the boat accelerates so fast the boat doesn't have time to walk. Highly recommended. We installed a Last-drop shaft seal at the same time and now enjoy a dry bilge.I pitched the prop to max out at 2800 RPM. The engine is way too powerful for this boat. After you get close to hull speed, each knot requires almost doubling the power. It does 7.5 knots at 2800 RPM and 3200 RPM won't get it to 8 knots, so what's the point? With this tiny fuel tank you daren't go fast, anyway.

Your source for propellers would be an excellent resource. Michigan and Campbell have prop size calculators on their web sites. Local prop shops here in SW fla are happy to recommend, I would think that was true in the Panhandle also.
