What size is my bolt/screw?

As I was leaving my '82 H30 in the rain earlier, I noticed one of two bolt/screws missing that attaches the starboard deck organizer to the coach roof.

The deck organizer is a low profile rectangular two sheave model that may be original (looks kind of like a Schaefer) - and is now missing one of two screws!

Previous related threads leave some doubt in my mind - does anyone know if there are nuts inside the liner that will fall off if I remove another bolt/screw to match the size of the one that's missing? or - can I simply remove the other screw, size it and screw it back in?

Shot in the dark here - does anyone know what size screw it is (the Phillips head is about 5/16 to 3/8 dia and maybe 1/8 high/thick - no idea how long)?

Lastly, since this two sheave/two screw organizer has only the geneoa halyard routed thru it (geneoa is attached to Hood RF) - can I sail her "lightly" with one screw missing (easy now!) if takes a while to get this rectified?

Thanks!!

As the Cherubini hunters evolved, Hunter put aluminum backing plates in between the fiberglass. The screws should be tapped into the aluminum. Release the load on the deck organizer and unscrew the other screw. Be careful not to break it off since there will probably be some corrosion between the two metals. replace the screw with a new one and don't forget the sealant. Otherwise, to make life simple, see if there's room to drill the hole out a little larger, tap it and put in a new screw. again, don't forget the sealant.
Just my 2 cents.

Pending responses from people with your model/year, if your deck organizer looks like the attached pic (but older of course and doesn't have all the decorative holes in the top plate), then the bolt size is 1/4" x 20 thread. My 1980 Hunter organizers look similar which I have removed in the past to repair and which I put back on. Length of bolt would be about 3/4" longer than the thickness of the organizer. Look for a bolt with a long shank that is not threaded. As for a nut underneath, if the area into which the organizer is situated is raised smooth gelcoat, you might have an aluminum plate underneath that is threaded already = no nut. If you need to sail before a proper fix, I would at least thread a 1/4" bolt into the vacant hole. Hopefully the sheeve without the bolt is still around?

Suggest your don't wait too long. Water can enter and begin start to cause damage. You probably should remove the entire organizer then reinstall, bedding/sealing properly with caulk.

Obviously Donalex has your correct answer.

Most of these organizers use 1/4 x 20, but it best to just use the existing one to determine.

Suggestion on getting a stuck on out?

I have them on my old H-30.

One nylon (deralon?)of the sheaves has denigrated. I want to replace the sheave but when I tried to remove the bolt but it wouldn't move. I didn't want to force it. It's a Phillips head bolt so you really can't get a grip on it. Any ideas on how to get it loose without shearing it off. or destroying the head?

My '82 H30 has a smooth raised area under the deck organizers with an aluminum plate laminated under it. The screws are drilled and tapped into it. Sorry, I don't recall the size. Just take the other one out and see.
