OK I think I will give the GFO a try. I will replace it in the water so I need to know what size. '86 C30. Since I am a diver I think I will try to stuff something in the shaft from the outside.
I replaced my stuffing last year while the boat was in the water. The leakage really wasn't that significant. I have a C34, had enough room to tie a rag around the shaft/tube to slow it down a bit. What did come in the bilge pump handled easily. Now if your looking for a reason to dive...I think your plan will work very well
MikeYou don't need to do that. Read the link below. The amount of water that comes in around the shaft from the tube is very small. You could work on it all day and not have a problem. If you want to stop any water entry, just wrap a plastic bag around the end of the tube and tie it onto the shaft. No need for you to get wet!For those of you who have always questioned stuffing boxes, this covers a lot of your questions.
