4hp & 8.8hp
I first used a 4hp Mercury on my 8' dinghy. That worked well, and I was able to carry it single-handed up the swim ladder without much difficulty. However, I wasn't very pleased with the Merc's quality; I'd bought it new and it only lasted about 2.5 years.I now have an 8.8hp Mariner, which I'm very pleased with. This is much too heavy to carry up the swim ladder, especially single-handed. Now, I just crane it into the cockpit using a block and tackle off the end of the boom. From the cockpit I can move it below for long passages. I stow it under the salon table. I once had an old 3.5hp Evinrude, and the nice thing about that motor was that it's motor head was perfectly sized to drop down into the starboard hold when on a trip, and it was nice to have it completely out of the way.Scott Frasers/v RubiconKey West
