I currently have a 10' rib with a 9.9 motor. I'm finding the motor a little too heavy to man handle. I am also consider davits but I think the rib & motor will be a bit heavy on my H-36. I am considering trading my motor in a 2 or 4 hp. 4 stroke. Does any one have some experience with these sizes? I like the light weight of the 2 but in a wind with a chop will I need a 4hp?

I first used a 4hp Mercury on my 8' dinghy. That worked well, and I was able to carry it single-handed up the swim ladder without much difficulty. However, I wasn't very pleased with the Merc's quality; I'd bought it new and it only lasted about 2.5 years. I now have an 8.8hp Mariner, which I'm very pleased with. This is much too heavy to carry up the swim ladder, especially single-handed. Now, I just crane it into the cockpit using a block and tackle off the end of the boom. From the cockpit I can move it below for long passages. I stow it under the salon table. I once had an old 3.5hp Evinrude, and the nice thing about that motor was that it's motor head was perfectly sized to drop down into the starboard hold when on a trip, and it was nice to have it completely out of the way. Java has a davits setup on his 356 which seems to work out OK. I think 2HP is too small and i have a 4HP that's too heavy for lifting by hand so I got a deal on a 2 stroke 3.5 that I will try this year. Nick

I have had both a Merc 3.3 and a 2.5. The 3.3 was replaced because it was stolen. The 3.3 has neutral, the 2.5 does not. If weight is important and I think it is a 2 stroke has to be considered. Both of the cited motors had adequate power. The 3.3 was used on the West Coast in decent surf. Ease your conscience by planting a couple of trees like our green leaders.

How much does your RIB weigh?
Doug: How much does your RIB weigh? I don't think you are going to be very happy trying to push a 100# plus dingy and people with all that gear with a 3.5 hp engine. I would suggest that you see if you can find someone with at least a 5hp engine and try that first. Here is another option that you may what to try. Keep your engine and purchase this setup.

Thanks Steve. I had one on my last boat. Up here on the great lakes boats have got a little bigger but the mariners have not. It would give my H-36 a overall length of 48'. That would make maneuvering into some of my favourite places difficult on a windy day. My rib is about 80# and I have a 9.9 two stroke on it. Motor is noisy old and uses a lot of fuel. It goes so fast that you can go a long ways in a short time. If it ever broke down I would never be able to row it back.

Doug, I have a Achilles 280(rib), Tohatsu 9.8.....
on my H36..total weight about 300lbs. I use the Weaver Davits like the motor boaters use and have the dinghy pivit on its side on top of the stern lockers. I use a Weaver Leaver to turn the motor 90degrees when it is on its side. I also use both jib winches to get the dinghy from a flat to side position. You have use the 4"Weaver Davits so that you can clear the swimm ladder handles. Happy with my system...had no other choice, traditional davits would have forced me to use a longer dock. abe

I have put davits on my Hunter 33 as has my neighbour. Our RIBs weigh 100lb and 10 hp honda 4 stroke 105#. Do not find any problems but when not in use I leave the RIB in the water not on davits.

mishap. Lesson...if you have a dinghy with wheels on the back, put them down before launching back onto the water (beach), or else the stern sits too high and the bow cant ride the waves coming in. Your dinghy will get flooded and you aren't going anywhere. I am in the process of getting a real camera, if and when I do and when I learn how to post pictures....I will let you know. That said, take a look at the weaver web site there is a lot of information. I placed my davits on top of the stern locker hatch...you must get the ones with a 4" estension or you can also get a different type that hangs on the vertical part of your stern just below the hatch opening. However, I was afraid that might sit too low and when the boat sailed the dinghy might skim the water. The only problem with this system is that you will not have access to the holding tank, nor the tank through hull fitting. You will not be able to open either hatch with the dinghy sitting on it.abe

click "davits for inflatable dinghy". I didn't use the davits they showed with the small 90degree elbow at the end. I used quick removal flat ones with the 4 inch extension (not risers)..look on the right column of that page and you will see "davit heads that extend 4" longer"..just remember you want the flat base one not the ones that angles at end or else it wont slip into the quick release. Plus you can adjust location of the flat base ones better that the ones that has the 90degree angle. You can also find the "quick kit removal davits". Also look up "motor mount for transom dinghy"...thats the weaver leaver. abe

Not a recommendation, just a comment. As a youth, a long time ago I fished on Lake Erie in our 17 ft wooden semi v with a 5 hp Johnson. We could not ski behind it but we sure spent a lot of time fishing.

Steve it work well as intended, I used it in steep following seas with no problem. My only complaint was getting from the dingy to the boat after I hooked it up. It is a good answer but it not the best for storage at the dock. I'm still thinking of buying a 2.5HP outboard.
