I am interested in replacing my anchor with a CQR plow anchor. All the Lit says the 35# is the correct size for the 33'6" length boat. Is there any added benefit by going with the next larger size, which hapens to be a 45# anchor? Any comments?

I would use a 35# CQR

George, I had a 30' Morgan weighing 10500# and I used a 35 CQR with 30' of 5/16" chain and NEVER had a holding problem. I also used a 22# Bruce with 20' of chain and I hung off that during hurricane Bob in 1991 in 60-70 kt of wind! I currently have a 45 CQR on my h40.5 and I use my old 35# CQR as an extra.

Depends on the bottom

We have a Hunter 33 and sail the North Channel which is mostly mud and sometimes weedy bottom. We have a 13# high tensile steel Danforth and 10' of chain. This anchor sets first time evry time and has never let go even during a 80knt winds We also have a 13# Fortress which does nor work in mud or weeds but does a good job in sand and gravel Since we don't have a bow mount with roller, these are better for us because they fit in the anchor locker. We have friends who swear the Bruce is the best and others who swear by the CQR. Unless you are going to be anchoring in very deap water or difficult bottom I wouldn't go above the manhfacturers recomendations. Also if you are in salt water and rough bottom the more chain the better to avoid abrasion on the rode

Near the limit?

Would you rather be near the upper limit of an anchor recommendation or the lower limit of the next larger size? Still, it depends on use. Will you need to anchor in bad weather? Will you need the anchor to last 50 years? etc.

Yes.

In this case bigger is always better in terms of holding power. Of course it is also added weight on the bow if you care about that sort of thing. If you'll sleep better get the bigger anchor. You could get a 44lb Claw for about $140 or a 45lb Delta for less than a 35lb CQR. 35lb's is probably enough 99% of time. Can you afford the 1% when it isn't. We use a 44lb Bruce on our 32 footer. Overkill? I sure the heck hope so! That's the point.

Anchor's Away

My H34 came with a Bruce 22. I added a CQR35 and 40' of chain. If I had to do it again I'd go with the Bruce 33 before the CQR plow. Like everyone says it deponds on the bottom where you sail. Barry "PER DIEM too"
