What size alternator do I have on my Yanmar?

I have a 1991 35.5 Hunter Legend with a 3 cylinder Yanmar 3GM30F (diesel). I believe the engine was replaced in 1999 so it may not be standard. My mechanic and I can't find anything on the alternator indicating it's output (the alternator appears is painted the same color as the engine). Does anyone know how I can find how many amps this puts out? Any help is appreciated.

35 Amp, (as I recall).

But, I think most were 55 apm as Fred recalls. I know some models were delivered with 35. I just don't recall which. So... it could be either. I expect an alternator shop could tell you. RD

Most are 55 (just above idle)

Seems as though there is a lower amp model available, that are around 38 amps but almost no engines were delivered with those. OK, just checked my shop manual. This is weird. Standard is 55amps,,,OPTIONAL, is 35amps! Who would do that?

Slow charge?

Fred, would it be to charge the battery back up slowly so it would increase the battery life? I seemed to recall that a fast re-charge is not real good for a deep cycle battery, and trickle charge is the best. Any of you Double E's wanna chime in?

Hitachi?

I believe that the standard alternator brand would be Hitachi LR155-20 as standard and a 12V/55A output. That is according to my Yanmar Service Manual.

No Andy, it's the other way around.

You want the biggest alternator that your engine (and money) can turn. The problem with most Yanmars is that they can only use one belt on the alternator. That limits your charge to about 80 amps before the belt starts to suffer. Deep cycles work best when cycled between 50 to 80% of full charge. The voltage to set your regulator for in the first stage is 14.6. OK, with that said, you had best go grab a book. There are other battery types and charging methods out there. Learn from a book. There are many good ones out there.

How to tell.

Paul is right, you should find an "LR" designation on a tag. You might have to use a light and dental mirror or remove the alternator to find it. Another way is to look at the wiring. The 55 amp has more wires because it requires an exciter voltage. The 35 amp only has two wires using a single small plug(I think).
