I bought a 1983 Cat 22 in January and the boat is was excellent condition. The teak was still in great shape. But I have noticed that over the past month a few spots that are not looking as good. My question is this. What is the best stuff to put on the teak to make it last and also look good. I am guess just an average stain from the store will not work. Or am I wrong? Thanks!!!

Practical Sailor reviews

Are you referring to external (exposed) or internal teak? Practical Sailor magazine (link) has done many tests on many teak coating products over the years. You might start by reviewing their findings. Personally, I have very little exposed teak on my boat (cockpit table and hatch boards) and I just give them a thorough cleaning, a light sanding, and then re-oil them. I use West Marine teak oil. It's quick & easy and looks great. --RonD

Use Cetol Marine!

I assume this is external teak,? We use Cetol Marine on all ours. Initially required sandpaper to prepare the surface, working down to fine grade. Three coats initially, then one per year keeps it glowing. Looks like varnish with none of the disadvantages - it's oil based and penetrates rather than surface coating which is subject to cracking, etc. Also works great on garden bench, etc. No surface prep is needed before each annual coat. It's expensive but a litre will last a long time.

Yes on the Cetol!

Yes on using Cetol for the wood. Very long lasting, easy to apply and looks great. Easy maintenance as well, just a light scrubbing with a Scotchbrite type pad and it's ready for a new coat next year. I just re-did mine a few months ago, check the link for some pictures of the wood with Cetol near the bottom of the page. Click to enlarge or start slideshow.
