What should I look for in purchasing?

Very nice ! Looks like you got a fantastic deal.

What are the towing rules with that U-Haul ?

I'm curious because our Dodge Ram died when towing the boat back from Niagara Falls, and we haven't purchased a replacement yet. We may end up renting a U-Haul for this weekend. Does they say anything about "no boat launching" or something ?

Good looking boat! Why the U-Haul? The Ford Explorer behind the boat should have no issues towing, but I'm guessing you just didn't have the hitch and wire harness set up yet?
This photo was taken in the driveway of the person we bought the boat from. That's HIS Ford Explorer. We have a hitch and wires on one of our cars to haul our smaller sailboat (a Snipe), but needed something bigger for the Catalina.

Check out this web page -- where it says, "UHaul pickups are perfect for...." it lists "towing a boat." When we picked it up, we told them it was to move a boat and they were fine with it. $19.99 for the day, plus $.59 a mile and gas. We're fine doing that twice a year!

Cool. My biggest worry was them being unhappy if it was used for launching/retrieving as opposed to simply towing.

We are seriously considering just renting from u-haul until the truck I'm restoring is complete.
Who knows we may even keep doing it even then.

When you calculate the cost of buying + maintenance + insurance, all for 4 or 5 times a summer, renting makes sense for many people.

In my case I'm running out of room to park and it's seems goofy to buy a used truck, just to sell it 6 to 8 months later.

We used it to launch, and we couldn't get the tongue extender pulled out on the trailer so the back end of the truck went in the water right up to the bumper! I was a little nervous but it ran fine after that -- no problems. We did buy their extra insurance for 9 bucks. Figured that was worth it.

We only need to move the boat twice a year -- to launch in the spring and put way in the fall. Renting is definitely worth it for us!

Tongue extenders are known to be a hassle when they rust. Some peopl avoid them for that reason. Just keep the thing greased and it won't rust. It's messy and you have to avoid touching the extender with your clothes when it's out, but it works. A neighbour of mine kept his lubed up with lithium grease, used it for years and never had an issue.

Trucks have a breather/snorkel hose that runs from the back axle up to the frame just below the underside of the box. In general, as long as that hose end doesn't go below the water it's ok.
If it does go below water, then water can go down the tube, get inside the differentrial+axle and eventually damage it.
If it was salt water, I'd rinse the brakes and wheels and body down with fresh water afterwards. A hand pump yard sprayer works well for that.

Yeah, for $9 the insurance is a no brainer, especially since it eases the hassle of dropping it off.

Hopeful...excellent deal based on the few photos. Even trailer looks good. Just got my Cat 22 this year as well and was hoping to trailer it home. Knowing you had good luck with U-Haul gives me optimisim about the process. My thoughts exactly about the rationale for a twice a year event.

I am jumping on to this thread late but did want to say I ended up buying a C22 in order to get a mooring. I sail on the Potomac near DC and the only marina near where I sail has a 25 year waiting list... Unless one buys a boat. So I bought s C22 that needed tons of work since I didn't want to wait 25 years (at my current age I wasn't able to picture how easily I could hop around on deck that 25 years from now). The very first project I tackled with much help from people on this board was a recore of the forecabin. It was easier than i had thought though messy. After that baptism, everything since has been comparatively easier. The point being that, while, you obviously got a boat in better shape than mine, there really isn't much on a c22 you can't restore or fix regardless of skill level going in if you don't mind rolling up your sleeves and learning. My only other advice is the wisdom of the 100 foot role.... "As long as it looks good from 100 ft away you are fine"
