What should I look for in purchasing?

A little late, but I believe that azguy gave the best pre-purchase advice, even though it is not what the OP wanted to hear. Seems a bit arrogant for the guy who asked questions to dismiss somebody who offered some excellent advice. I also believe a survey would have been a waste of money for somebody who admits to being ignorant in boating lingo.

Reading some books and joining the C22 association are highly recommended for the new owner.

A little off-topic: When somebody asks, "what does everybody think about X model of Y brand boat that I will be looking at tomorrow," it's a safe bet that the asker has already made up his mind and is looking for reinforcing encouragement. Any advice that has the asker slow down the process, or to consider alternatives, will not be welcomed.

Jumping in even later. Even though azguys advice may seem a little caustic, he's right. I had no idea what I was doing and it showed. Should've done more research, should've known what to look for and should have been more patient. But hell, what I got works, ain't pretty but it's a hell of a learning experience. Which, btw, is how I learn best, just jumping into it.
Leaving this for the next guys who want to post for some purchasing advice.

I meant no offense, maybe I'm differant because I research everything. I took ASA 101 &103 and then rented C22's for 3 months, read everything on every forum, read books, watched hundreds of hours of YouTube videos and looked at a dozen boats before finding mine and deciding to pay top dollar and not buy a weekend project...

The OP was the one that said he only had a''vague'' idea what all the terminology was. How can you buy a boat or anything with a vague idea what you are looking at.....just saying...

For what it's worth, I did find azguy's information helpful, I was just turned off by the unwelcoming attitude, the laughing emoticon, and the assumption that I was not researching this. In fact, I've spent hours reading this forum, talking with the 7 other C22 owners at the Yacht Club we belong to, and sailing on their boats with them. Yes, my partner and I are newbies to Catalina's but not entirely to sailing (we currently own a Snipe). My partner has much more experience on bigger boats (and knows the terminology better than I), but I'm the one who tends to do the internet research -- thus the statement that I am a little vague on the terminology. I'm appreciative of everyone's help -- including azguy's. We're happy with our purchase. All it really needs is a new mainsail by next year. We're launching on Saturday and sailing it on Sunday! I'll post pics soon.

Also.. for the record... I'm not a guy. I'm a gal. :)

Boat Owner Gal:

Looks well maintained from the photos. :)
I'm kinda envious of anyone with blue hulls or stripes, and those cushions sure beat the 70's brown Catalina used.

As long as the keel hanger, pin, winch, turning ball etc. are ok. looks like you should be good to go.
Check the wheel bearings. Many trailers only get used a couple times a year so the maintenance is sometimes ignored, at the owners peril.

As for the mainsail.. My boat has a 28 yr old original. I'm hoping that sail tape and lighter winds will hold it together until my new one arrives. It has vertical tears in the leech.
Nothing that gorilla tape can't solve. LOL I told my wife that we should spend a day at the local foofoo power boat marina and see if the redneck sail scares them away. ;-)

Good score, great price. I love the cushion fabric, boat was loved, that's for sure. I have a Rolly Tasker main, solid sail, decent price. Inspect the swing keel parts and think about replacing all of it if t looks worn at all before you have a winch or cable failure...

Congrats, enjoy :D

I am glad to hear you were willing to trust your instincts. Apparently, you made that indefinable connection with the boat that most of us understand. She will present challenges and difficulties, but adventures, excitement and contentment will be her rewards.
Welcome to a new dimension, Sailor, relax and relish.

$2700 is a great price for that boat, I'm jealous. There C22's for sale here on the west coast in much less acceptable condition and asking prices are $6 to $7K!

I echo the statements of Leeward Rail, the biggest concern that cannot be seen in the pics is the condition of the keel and its associated hardware. Being a freshwater boat and the appearance that the boat has been well taken care of I doubt you have any serious issues. The P.O. (Previous Owner) said he needed room in his barn, which means it was dry sailed (not stored in the water) and kept out of the weather when on the trailer. I'm fairly certain this guy was keeping up with the maintenance and its in good shape.

The way it is, go sail it for the rest of the summer and enjoy yourself. I wouldn't worry about any major changes or upgrades until you have some time on it. Beyond that, I can recommend a few things you could do over the winter for improvements that are not very intensive and don't require a bunch of big tools or $$$.

Also, Like leeward mentioned, the one thing you want to check now is the wheel bearings on the trailer. Let me add that you also check all the clamps on below waterline hoses, specifically the 'volcano' where the keel cable passes through. Make sure they are tight and not rusted.

Not sure if this will work, but here's the listing with pictures:

https://rochester.craigslist.org/boa/5110172379.html

The mainsail is old -- perhaps original! That will be replaced by next spring. And we'll need a new battery. Other than that, it's in great shape!

I would have jumped on that boat in a heartbeat if it came along when I was looking. From reading the ad, it looks like the owner sailed and cared for her and a freshwater sailed trailer queen is probably a safe bet in a used boat that old. Congratulations on your purchase, go sailing, get to know your boat and worry about upgrades next year. Oh, and post lots of pictures, we love pictures.....

Good looking boat! Why the U-Haul? The Ford Explorer behind the boat should have no issues towing, but I'm guessing you just didn't have the hitch and wire harness set up yet?
