We are replacing all of our halyards and the admiral wants new shackles
Which ones are you using?

A shackle for a halyard would be a halyard shackle as sail sfbay has suggested.
And as his link says, go Ronstan for price and strength.
They have a well proven track record.

Knots. Sorry, had to....

Main. The last two boats started with shackles and both went to bowlines. Easier to adjust for wear, no advantage in having shackle. One less thing. Also, knots don't scratch up the head pulleys as shackles can, and you can hoist higher than splice-shackle combinations. The last time I stayed with a quick shackle was on a beach cat.
Jib. A screw pin shackle that fits the furler.
Reacher. Either screw pin or quality spin shackle. Wichard.
Chute. Spin shackles.

If quality spin shackles are too expensive, try soft shackles. Cheap spin shackles fail too often.

No "quick shackles." I've had too many fail. I'd go with a soft shackle first.

Tylaska are the cream, Wichard thimbles are nice too, nothing wrong with the more utilitarian Ronstan halyard shackles either, depends on the budget, but you can't really go wrong with any of those 3.

If your jib halyard runs through a halyard retainer at the masthead (often added for the furler) and you have seen any wear apparent on the halyard from friction against the retainer, use a halyard hitch to secure the shackle, not a splice. That way when the wear returns, you can cut the damaged lenght off the halyard and just re-tie the halyard hitch.

For a modest size boat spin shackles have just few failure modes, and none of them are related to strength:
  • You didn't fully close it. Yes, it will happen.
  • Big lanyard snagged on something on the way up, pulling the shackle open. This is more of a problem on flying sails. Keep the lanyard minimal with no bulges.
  • Lanyard winds into the head block, pulling it open. Another cause of mystery opening. However, I know of a guy that saw this happen while up in a bosun's chair. He was very lucky and managed to hug the mast, preventing decking out. He slid down to the spreaders with only minor injuries. There he stood, teeth chattering, until another halyard could be rigged over to him. Obviously, snap shackles are NOT for bosun's chairs. You want something that cannot open under load.

Admiral read that some snap shackles come apart at the wrong time.
She likes the tylaska
When the admiral gives a thumbs up NOTHING ELSE matters
Got it???
