which side the markers should be on!
Otoh, it does appear that the next red one should be on the right too...so maybe some heavy rains moved a lot of sand?

I forget, what is the rule on the other sections along the east coast??? It gets tricky coming into an inlet where the red right returning from sea conflicts with the red right returning to Texas. As in Pensacola where the ICW is just inside the pass. Tom

is always on the west side of the channel. The way I remember it: red is to earth as green is to ocean. This poor guy was just a little left of the marker. I know that for sure because I ran aground in the ICW once but just east of a green marker. The funny part of the story was that another boat about the same size as my 36 was passing me by my starboard didn’t run aground. Three days later I met the same boat and asked them what their draft was. They told me that it was 8 ft, (3 more than our boat !!!!) I told them I was amazed that they were able to pass me that day when his wife took the radio and told me that they ran aground 6 times in the past few days!!!!

I know the ICW has its own marker system, but...
I was always taught "red right return" (or upstream)--which would put it to the west going north....and green on the right (or east) going downstream, or south. So apparently he WAS on the correct side of the marker. Another example of the effects of the budget cut for dredging the ICW, maybe? I know I've heard a lot of stories of boats going aground in the ICW in the past year.

Since he was Northbound..
He had to leave red to the west, that is to the left!!!. He was on the wrong side. In the ICW red right return does not work. The pix was taken in my north bound trip from FtLauderdale to Jax

The red right returning to Texas applies everywhere in the ICW!! Going north on the east coast is away from Texas so the red should be on the left. Pilot error!!!! My only excuse is that I've never sailed the ICW on the east coast. Tom

Over here on the gulf coast of fla. it is simple, green to gulf, red returning to texas or whatever you want to say. There are areas that it doesn't matter which side you're on, it's just too dam shallow. COE needs to pull the peanut butter out of their ears and listen to the $ailor$ of the country and maintain the ICW like they said they would when they sold it to us 40 years ago.

ICW Markers
Markers in the ditch are tricky. As you go across a bay, half way across you're going out to sea. Then the next half you're coming in. Best idea find both red & green and stay between them. I think it changes 3 or 4 times from Pensacola to Mobile Bay. Also, check the charts for spoil piles from dredging the channel.

Which way do we go
The ICW is Red right as it moves clockwise around the USA south on the east coast of Florida and north on the west coast of Florida. Once you leave the ICW you revert to right right returning. The markers will often switch side when going from non ICW to ICW channels. That being said if the boat was headed south on the east coast it would appear that he was on the wrong side of the marker.

Sorry. If he was heading north on the east coast red should be on the left in the ICW, it would appear as if he was trying to take it on his right.

How Boring Life Would Be
If we all did everything the same way, at least with the channel marking system in the USA gives the rest of us some entertaining messages to read. I have to admit to not knowing much about the ICW but from the photo's and discussion it seems to be a mighty stretch of water I will just have to remember to get some local sailing instructions before visiting. Russell Slough, near Beaufort NC?
Looks a lot like a place I know well... Russell Slough, near Beaufort, NC, low tide. Tow Boat US and Sea Tow just "hang out" there to deal with the regular groundings. To their credit, Tow Boat US will generally watch for boats that are heading for trouble, and try to warn them, and direct them...
