I have recently purchased a 77 hunter 25, and I have a question regarding the jib sails the boat came with. Their are two total; one goes about 75% up the mast & when trimmed in tight pulls back to about the mast, while the other goes all the way up the mast & when trimmed in tight pulls back to about 3' from the entrance to the cabin (looks a little bigger than the main actually). What is the nomenclature for these sails? Is their a specific time to use one or the other? Any help greatly appreciated.

Head Sails / Genoa
.......one goes about 75% up the mast & when trimmed in tight pulls back to about the mast. Sounds like a storm jib or 110% Genoa. .......while the other goes all the way up the mast & when trimmed in tight pulls back to about 3' from the entrance to the cabin. Depending on the distance from the headstay, either a 135% or 150% Genoa. Measure from the intersection of the deck and headstay to the front side of the mast, this will be 100%. In sail measurement, this is the J measurement. 115% = J + 15% 135% = J + 35% 150% = J + 50% So, your 150% Genoa is 1 1/2 times the length along the foot of the sail from your headstay to your mast and so on. Heres a good site I found for explaining all the different measurements, it was very helpful to me. I'm a new Hunter 25 owner as well and a novice sailor. Hope this helped and I'm sure one of the old timers with more wisdom than I will post as well and explain more fully.

Not to be nit picking Jeff but
The measurement on the sail is made from the clew along a line perpendicular to the luft not along the foot. That is why a 75% can go all the way back to the mast.

Does each have a specific use?
That link was great, & I'm gonna measure the sails today to determine exactly what they are. Is their a specific function for these differenr types of jib sails; i.e. one beter for upwind vs downwind, etc. Thanks.

Hunter 25 Sails
I have a "76" 25' Hunter, you'll find that your Genoa Jib will make a huge difference in performance for your boat in winds up to 30 knts, use the smaller of course in more extreme conditions. But if you want to keep up with the larger boats, the larger sail is mandatory.
