Kevin, I have a H376, it is powered by a Yanmar 3JH2E a 36hp 3 cyl diesel. The boat was delivered with a 17x15rh two blade prop. It does not perform in a heavey sea. What would you recomend and why ? Many Thanks Tony Wilcox

I put a 3 blade Max - Prop on our 37.5

and I like it a lot. It is an 18 inch prop and I gained almost a full knot of speed and much better performance into heavy weather. I had a 2 blade Max before and my biggest complaint was the vibration which the 3 blade completely eliminated. There are some who have put on autoprops and really like them. Some haven't liked them since they are a tight fit. There is a stainless steel version of the autoprop which sounds interesting but I don't know the name of the manufacturer. I saw them advertised at Steveston Marine in Steveston B.C. There is some previous discussion in the archives about all of this.

Proper prop.

Dear Tony: Thank you for your letter. With the combination of vessel and motor you stated the recommended two blade is a 17” x 13” and a 17” x 12” three blade, both equipped on a 1” shaft. I’m not sure why your particular vessel is equipped with a 17” x 15” two blade. Before going out and purchasing a three blade you should discuss the current pitch with your prop person. You may have a reduction gear, which may be different, then the spec. unit being called out by Hunter, which would account for the difference between my recommendation and your installed prop. It would be my guess that your inefficiencies are caused by either to much load being created by the current pitch or the fact its just a two blade. By converting to a three blade, you should increase the motoring efficiency by apx. 30%+. This will help to maintain your vessels forward speed when confronted with heavy winds or seas. The current vibrations being created by the current two blade, will also be drastically reduced when a three blade is used. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Kevin L. Woody

Patrick, Thanks for the input but I believe that on my boat its not practice to install 18" prop due to poor clearance to the hull, you said your boat was a 37.5 this is I suspect a different mold. Also it is not possible to install an Autoprop on my boat ( manufactures reccomendation ) Bye for now Tony

Prop size

Hello Tony: The recommended three blade is working out to be a 17” diameter x 14” pitch three blade. Hope this helps you out. Sincerely, Kevin L. Woody
