549 is the Hull Number

355 is the model nunmber, built/finished in May 82 and you have revision G. velero

Did you mean...

Valero, If 355 is the model #, did you mean the hull # would be 49 ? Jeff

Hull Number

I think Valero, meant that the model is "35" and the Hull # "549". On my H31 the Hull # is HUN31738D787, Hunter 31, Hull # "738" and that is what I put on the sails as the sail number. bill

Hull Numbers vs US Sail Numbers

This topic caught my eye, and my attention, and I was curious. By no means trying to hijack the thread, but was wondering what the rule that you guys follow for sail numbers? My understanding was that generally the only need for sail numbers was for racing, and that generally for racing, US Sail was the governing body for allocating out the numbers. Now, that isn't always a hard and fast rule, I've seen it go either way. Jeff is obviously looking to go with a hull number, I went with a US Sail number. So just out of curiousity, what do the rest of you do? Why do you get it and where do you get it from?? T J

Did they change them at some point?

That seems like a good interpretation ("35" as the model and the following 3 digits as hull number) but my 33' has a hull number of HUN60043M78B33... which doesn't seem to fit that scheme at all. Just curious if there is another interpretation or if they changed the numbering system at some point, if anyone knows. I'm a little curious which is my hull number, too, or in fact if there is any easy way to dig into the history of the boat and manufacturing run.

I was mistaken

on my Hull ID # after reading the responses, I checked on my number, and it is actually HUN33549M82G, not the HUN35549M82G I had thought. I had transposed a few numbers. So the Hun33 designates 33', the 549 the hull number. Thanks Jeff

You are correct. US Sailing does assign the sail number after you apply for one and it stays with the vessel for life. All US Sailing numbers have 5 digits. Many who don't race regularly will use whatever number is on the sail from the manufacturer. Example, on your model, 35.5 is on the factory sail and some guys will use this number. Problem is there are hundreds of 355's. A US Sailing number is unique to only one boat. Using a production number will have less duplication potential. BTW I have a buddy that used to drive his YC race committee bonkers. His sail # is 10 1/2. They tried to argue that there are no fractions in sail numbers. He requested that they produce the rule that stipulated this. Of course they couldn't, so he races with 10 1/2. Many times he is scored as 105 ;D
