Why does everyone insist on calling 2000 the "New Millennium?" Are we all so influenced by the media that we just take whatever is thrown at us and go with it?? Please, someone explain this to me... Thanks.. Ron

Maybe we are mindless.

Ron: Probably no one really gives a crap about this. Yes, it is not a new century, millineum, or decade. Just think about it. We can have the real celebration next Dec 31/Jan 1,2001. This was just practice for the big one.

I'm #3, but I don't try at all...

also aplies to the "new" Millenium; it's actually the third, big deal, huh? Well, since NONE of us were here for the last two, I guess that makes it "new" to us, no? But then again, EVERY day is the end of a 1,000 year period. Nothing exciting about that. Which reminds me, why is it every radio station insists on saying "The New KCLH (for Call Letters Here)" for about five years in a row. Something is only new for an instant, no? It's another reason not to watch the "news" on TV; if it's already happened, it's not news, it's recent history. And if it's already happened, there's not much anyone can do about it, so why watch it? Phil, I hope you realize you started this. :)

Oh yeah, and another new thing

In today's computer world, most counting and tracking starts with zero instead of one. (OK, so that's pretty lame.)

New Number

I think you all missed the point. The number at the end of the date changed drastically. The first two digits are completely diferent. In most people's interests that's what we are celebrating. It's not really a big deal but it sure was fun!

TV relates to Zeroes, zeroes relate to TV

Zeroes appeal to TV types (news, talk shows, nearly all TV programming), and TV appeals to zeros (zero social contact, zero intellect, zero content). Wasn't the Seinfeld show the penultimate show about zero? Happy new year! This is the last year of the second millenium, and the last year of the 20th century, and the last year of the 9th decade of that century. Make the most of it. And try to survive to see the 21st century. The Arabs invented "zero" around 800 years ago (I think the 12th century, but I could be wrong). I think the Crusaders brought the Arab numbering system back to Europe. I'm glad we use Arab numerals, otherwise the TV types would be celebrating the MM year (Roman numerals).

Your all off your roc...

Since the calendar we are using has been corrected a number of times the true (at least the best date argument I have heard) millennium date was sometime in August of 1997! So all the naysayers who claim that the date is next year can "sit on there hands" (as quoted from 'What do you Know'). I and all my personal favorite people had a wonderful time over the New Year and have decided to have a Millennium Party every year!!!

GPS Millennium

I don't know about all of you, but I practiced cellebrating the new Millennium in August 1999 when the GPS clock turned back to "1". So, I'm ready for Jan 1, 2001. Happy New Year.
