What Makes a Good "Tiller Tamer?"

The unstable helm of the C-22 makes it difficult to jump into the cabin to retrieve something without the boat rounding up or falling off. To mitigate this I have a couple of bungy cords on the tiller to help restrict the travel. This is marginally effective. Can anyone recommend a better way to "tame the tiller?" I know there are many different systems, but what is simple and works well for the C-22 sailor? Thanks.

Use rope....

...instead of bungee. Two jam cleats on the coaming(or the tiller) to adjust the control lines. You want the tiller locked, not bouncing with bungee.

look at this idea

I bought one of these. It simple, affordable, and well constructed. I haven't tried it yet but we'll find out how it works this summer. Hope this helps! Phil

Cajun Tiller Tamer

A Cajun Tiller Tamer is pretty simple, flexible ..........and inexpensive/free. Just a line going from side to side, with three loose wraps around the tiller and cleated at each end. When you want it to hold the tiller position, simply push the wrapped loops of line forward on the tiller until it tightens up and go about your business. It seems to work best for some, with the line going on and off the bottom side of the tiller with the loops on the top, may be different according to the cleat location vertically. A big advantage of this is that the line is at the rear of the tiller and not in the way when not needed, then slid forward when it is needed. www.blumhorst.com/potterpages/photopoint/0005/cajun-tiller-tamer.htm Good Luck! Tamer

I'll give the Cajun tamer a try, and if I don't like then the suggested tiller tamer. Thanks.

I have used this on two boats with great success. You can dial in how much friction you want. I found using a piece of bungee on the end of the rope gives it a little cushion and constant tention on the line.
