What kind of Tape

My ancient but functional WP 10 autopilot had some kind of tape under the clamp that holds the unit to the pedestal. It was very sticky and a little "cushiony" I'm guessing to protect the unit from the screw head in the pedestal that tightens down the throttle cable clamp. I had to remove the tape to replace the cable. Should have saved a piece but didn't.
Any ideas about what kind of tape would be a good replacement/substitute?

Thanks, Marty, but I think mounting tape has adhesive on both sides. Double sided won't work for this application.

Don't peel the cover off of one side! Now you have one sided thick tape!

Gaffer's tape is a useful thing to have; sort of like very heavy duty duct tape made from canvas. Easily lasts 2-4 years in full sun, unlike duct tape which fails within months. Most commonly black, but white can be better where visible and seems to last nearly as long.

Have to wonder if this is another use for the famous Butyl Tape!!

Thinwater's suggestion led to several other leads. I am considering something called "mastic tape". A little pricey considering how little I need, but it looks like that or butyl tape.

You may want to consider Atomic Tape or one of it's relatives. This tape seals to itself. Not expensive and works well.

Stu, Stu. You talk like a guy who's not married. When I broke my 9/64 drill bit and announced I needed to go out to replace it, Alex remarked that in 3000 square miles of ocean how could 1/64" possibly make any difference. I had no answer.
