Irene left here a few hours ago; lots of wind and rain, but no damage to my house, or water in the basement. Lots of branches down in the yard. My dog is in heaven. No word on how the boat fared. Left her at her floating dock, lines doubled up with chafing gear, duct taped the companionway and vent. Sails and boom off, halyards and lines tied down, taped, etc. My parents live across the street from the Sound, and they were telling me that the storm surge was spraying water across the street onto the lawns across from them. And this is with the beach being about twelve feet below the street. Fortunately, my boat is a good mile up the river from the Sound, behind several large rocks and one really sharp dog leg. We shall see.

Probably too late by now, but the tape used for shrink wrap is tough, water proof, and does not leave residue.

Sorry for not writing back sooner. I ended up using gorilla tape for most everything, held up great, and it came off the companionway without residue. HOWEVER, before finishing taping everything up yesterday, a buddy grabbed the roll to tape a few things on his boat, and dropped the roll in the water so I had to finish the job with blue painters tape.

We had all sorts of trouble getting the gorilla tape to adhere to his boat as it was already misting when he tried to tape it, wiped the surfaces dry, but it never really stuck good. Had the same issue when I finished up my companionway with the painters tape, and noticed the following things: A) painters tape goes on MUCH easier and conforms to surfaces far better. B) painters tape did a far better job adhering when the surface was damp. C) both did equally well at staying put through the storm, with gusts at the dock measured as high as 80kts D) painters tape requires much less effort to remove. E) Gorilla tape hurts like a bitch when it attaches its self with all the vigor of an alien parasite to any and all arm hair you have when you get it even slightly close to your arm...

Next time, I'm just using painters tape (bonus because it's cheaper too)
