going to tape all the hatches, lockers and other openings on the boat, but what kind of tape do I need to use?

I am hoping there is an alternative to duct tape that is suggested as that leaves a nasty residue that is a pain to clean off...

is blue painters tape enough to block wind / rain?

Real duct tape only leaves residue after a very long time, months. That is the silver stuff with the peel-off on the adhesive. I use it over the winter to seal the anchor locker and it does not leave a residue. I used it with plexiglass to cover the holes when I had my portlights out for replacement. Comes right off when only on for a week or so, little harder after a winter..

Try painter's "blue tape". It seals well and removes easily without any residue. For a few days, it'll keep the water out too.

Gorilla tape is very strong and will not leave residue as readily as duct tape ... blue painters tape will lose adhesion immediately with just humidity alone.

Gorilla tape will pull up anything that isn't secure and it pulls up paint off drywall for sure.

I've had bad luck with the blue masking tape for anything other than painting. It just didn't stick well enough to hold any weight or tension. I agree that duct tape can leave some residue if you leave it on for awhile (or if it is in direct sunlight), but acetone has always worked well for me in getting rid of the goop. And you can't beat the stuff for ease of use, cost and functionality.

Had a couple of good rains when my boat was masked with blue painters tape for painting the boot and cove stripes and it held fine. Surface has to be clean and dry when you put it on.

Blue Painters tape will not work ! Band-aids would work better. Use duct or the gorilla tape its gonna be like a pressure washer out side.

With hurricane winds?
Painters tape? I was just saying it will still be there after a rain. I would probably just lock down my hatches and not think about taping but it is a good idea.
I had my GS 41 thru 3 hurricanes (2x Cat 3 and 1x Cat 2) and it was fine locking down the hatches and dogging the ports.
Sorry about being unclear on the tape.

If I were doing it, I'd coat the rubber seals with vaseline petroleum jelly and lock the hatches down hard. You cannot depend on tape for something like this. That's what I do to control leaks if I'm anticipating a lot of rain or spray. Seems to work OK.

200 MPH Tape

The point of taping is not just to keep stuff in place, but to keep the wind/water out of the interior of the boat and blowing other areas out. Duct tape is the way to go.. they don't call it 200 MPH tape for nothing! Gorilla tape may be an alternative, but I have no direct experience with it in hurricane force winds. Duct tape will not leave any residue unless you leave it out in the elements for an extended period of time. Painters tape looks pretty, but is for painting.. not hurricanes :naughty:

Cheers,
Brad

Blue masting tape stayed on the leg of my stepladder for more than a year before I pulled it off. If you have waxed your boat then tape shouldn't stick, that's why you wax it.

The problem Brad is that the grey stuff is what people consider to be duct tape. Duct tape is a shiny silver with a paper peel off. It does not leave a residue and will not come off in a wind storm.

A semantics quarrel here won't be of any use. Duct tape comes in many grades and types. But for this purpose the OP wants to know what he can use for a 24 hour event that will not leave a messy clean up chore. My Vote is 2 inch wide ble masking tape.

Are you talking about the metal foil duct tape?

We have a hurricane once a week down here. I have seen people tape up their windows on their houses, which doesn't do much when a tree branch goes travelling through, but I haven't noticed it on a boat. Like Ross says it's a 24 hour event. Water leaking in is the least of my worries in a hurricane. I don't even sweat the wind. The surge is what destroys things.
Unless you don't have latches on your hatches. In that case I would install latches if you have time, regular old duct tape if you don't have the time. I would not use Gorilla tape.
It's the 5200 of tape.

I did my usual weekly shopping this afternoon. There were about 300 percent more people out than usual and tey were buying as if they had to survive for two weeks. By monday morning everything will be normal. There may still be some power outages but the world will not have blown away or washed away in a flood.

Re: Ross

My sister has homes in Larchmont and Orient. For this storm chose to spend the weekend in Orient. We lived in Connecticut until 1956 and weathered Donna and Hazel and several other lessor storms. Most of the time there is no damage to most people but when a tree falls on my house it is major damage, when a tree falls on a house in the next town then only one house was damaged by the storm.. I would not in any way make light of these storms but the storms themselves only last a day. so our efforts can be taken down almost as soon as the sky clears. We have trees come down in thunder storms and sometimes they crush a house and sometimes they take out a power line. The problem with a hurricane you can have one great big obvious powerline problem and 500 little ones and the little ones need to be fixed before they go hot with the whole sector.
