What kind of roller furling would be suitable for a Hunter 33? Do you have an opinion about the Spintec? How long must the luft on the jib be? Thank you, Joe

Excellent quality.

Joe: I think that they are one of the best units on the market. They are designed for much larger boats. You should speak with the folks at Spin-tec (located in the California foothills). The foil can be cut to size. They are very helpful so give them a call and get the scoop. Some of the features that I like are the large drum. It accepts a larger line, making furling much easier on the hands. It also gives you better mechanical advantage over most other furlers. The drum is also easily adjustable up and down. These units also do not have ball bearings that can/will corrode and fall apart. You do not need to worry about flushing out the unit after a sail. There is also not metal/metal contact. They have had a booth at Sail Expo in Oakland, CA. so you can go see them in April 2007.

Spin Tec...

Here is a recent post of mine on SpinTec, fyi: Furlers "Practical Sailor" rated most major brand furlers as "pretty good." I think the issues are who is going to install it, and after-installation service (as well as price, of course). I put a Furlex 200 on my H28.5 and have been very happy with it. I looked hard at the SpinTec furler and it sure looks like a quality furler at the right price. The only reason I didn't buy it was that it requires you to go aloft to attach the head of the sail to the top of the furler extrusion (no sliding upper swivel, like most furlers). They also have an extra "device" you can buy as an option to try to connect the head to the foil from the deck, but it looks pretty awkward and difficult to use. To me, it was like trying to toss that little ring around a coke bottle at a carnival. Being able to raise, or lower, a headsail easily from the deck, and alone, was and is a pretty important feature to me.

I suggest you look at CDI

Flexible furler they sell them in the chandlery for a darn good price. Check out the warranty too! It is about the best in the industry.

Furlers, Furlers, Furl.......

CDI designs are intended for the crusing market vs. many others vying for a chunk of the racing market. I'm not familiar with the Spin Tec product or it's price. The biggest difference is in the type and quality of components that may add only fractions of a percent in overall performance but take a large bite at the bottom line. I have just received a replacement furler drum assembly for my '81 H-30 that has well over 90,000nm umder her keel. I'd say that is excellent service from any quality level product.

Hi Joe, lots of choices, but FWIW, our 1991 ...

model year came with a double line Hood furler. It has never jammed, always works and all original parts. The only thing I do is rinse any salt water from the drum with fresh water when we return from a cruise. Terry
