What kind of gas?

What octane fuel is recommended for outboard engines these days. The mix is 50:1 and I have heard different things from using as high octane fuel as you can find to using whatever fuel is cheapest. Cost is not an issue. I will not burn enough fuel over the course of a season to make a substantial diffence. I just want to do whatever is best for my new outboard. Thanks.

Use good, low octane gas

Outboards have a low compression ratio and any octane will do. Don't waste money on premium. If the outboard is really old, you may not want to use a methanol blend. Just make sure it is fresh with no water or contaminents.
