What kind of battery do you guys use? I just bought a cheap 12V marine battery at Walmart ($79 bucks) and it weighs a ton... More than the outboard lol

Aren't there little "lawn and garden" 12V batteries that would work?

Work for what? Starting an outboard? Powering a refrigerator, running lights, autopilot, electronics, etc…?

If you can be more specific about what job(s), we can suggest the right tool.

Good point... :)

All I've got at the moment is 4 or 5 cabin lights, and the navigation lights - that's it. No instruments, no autopilot... Outboard is manual start.

If you are kind to it that battery it may well meet your needs for 7 years or longer. Being kind means not discharging it too far (down to 70%) and fully charging it in between. You could add a standalone depth finder and a simple GPS and it would support those as well.

A starting battery will not last in that application. On a "total cost of ownership" basis you are doing right.

Any decent deep cycle battery would be your best choice. I’m assuming that’s what you bought at Walmart. If you decide to go with AGM or lithium, remember those require different charger types which cost more money.

Agreed, forget lithium and AGM, a good ol' flooded deep cycle battery from Wallyworld will do you fine at this stage. Buy their best one, and call it a day. We have a pretty spendy Trojan 24TMX (also flooded) but you don't need to spend that much based on your stated use. Wallymart "Everstart" will do just fine.
