Now I understand

Correction, it was the 375 ... also, I believe the larger boat we looked at was the 445 (which I wasn't impressed with).
I believe that is different. My aft berth has a hatch that opens into the cockpit and has a seat that folds over it. There is a small lip as well, but as long as the hatch is closed it is fine. But, if you do not have the window latched correctly it does leak.

I too am partial to Catalina's as I have owned 2 and they are a good value for the price. But, for blue water, I believe my preference would be Island Packet.

This is the year that i am comparing the price of beans at Safeway and Giant food stores. So 100,000 dollar boats are as out of reach for me as 12 dollar a pound standing rib roast. I didn't go to the boat show because I have a perfectly satisfying boat. We can all dream but for many dreaming is all you get.

My fav boat

I saw some great boats and came up with a favorite. The best boat we saw is the "paid for" Hunter 25 that is now in our backyard for the winter.

Re: My fav boat

Has anyone noticed the shortage of boats in the 27 to 32 foot range? It is much like the trend in housing. My first house was 24x30 feet on the foundation giving a total area of 720 square feet. The smallest houses I see being built today are more than twice that and most free standing houses are more that 3000 square feet and the smallest town house or row houses exceed 2000 square feet but people haven't gotten any bigger and they certainly don't need the space for work projects. Our marina has more slips for boats under thirty feet than for boats larger than that. Cars are getting smaller and even the large vans aren't much bigger than the full size sedans of the fifty's when the big Buicks and cadillacs would be close to 6000 pounds gross weight with 500 cubic inch engines.

Nauticat 321 pilothouse 32 Erie PA
our favorite boat was not even at the annapolis show. it is the nauticat 37 motorsailing pilothouse, made by siltala yachts finland-- and was shown only at the newport show. for those sailing in cold rainy windy conditions, the dual helm stations are unbeatable. turn on the windshield wuipers and steer from below... the nauticats also offer 2 full staterooms and engine access is fully enclosed inside below the companionway steps. compare those nauticats to the pacific seacraft pilothouses with one stateroom and terrible engine access thru a floor board in the open cockpit...

I'd have to disagree with you on the size of people issue. Latest government survey says 6 out of 10 kids are obese! Maybe the boat makers are preparing for the onslaught!! lol

Maybe that's the cause of the problem ,like elastic waist band in pants. No stertch and a leather belt will tell you about that extra helping of awfully good tasting food.

I didn't go to Annapolis, but my favorites at the Newport show were the Herreshoff Cruising 29 and the IP Estero. The Herreshoff is a cold-molded, glass-skinned, old fashioned beauty, with bronze hardware (including the wheel pedestal). The deck is glass, but the coach house is woodwork finished brightly. The joinery below is white paneling with bright beams. A very traditional interior, with 2 pilot berths! And the butterfly skylight is functional and beautiful. The "29" refers to the waterline length; the boat is actually 36 feet on deck. This is my dream boat if I am cruising in New England.

The Island Packet Estero is my dream boat if the Admiral and I are off to the Bahamas and BVIs. I love the below decks layout; I think the salon pushed all the way forward is the best use of that space. On deck, the best hardware, in-mast furling and a jib boom mean effortless sailing, with still plenty of lines to pull and tweak sail shape.

I love to dream at the boat shows....
